About us
Milestone Vets is an independent 9-vet small animal practice situated in a beautiful part of Devon and within easy reach of the coast, Dartmoor, and Exeter. Our main site is at Kingsteignton, just outside Newton Abbot, and we have a branch surgery in Kenton, situated on the grounds of Powderham Castle.
We are a progressive, modern practice and are proud to offer excellent veterinary care to everyone, irrespective of their means. We believe fostering open communication and building lasting relationships with our clients allows us to achieve this.
We are growing and are looking for a vet with some experience who is comfortable with routine surgeries to join our stable and long-standing team. Our team has a wealth of knowledge, from new graduates to over 20 years in practice. We're committed to creating a collaborative environment, with daily huddles in the morning to catch up and discuss inpatients and any interesting cases. We’re a team that really enjoys working together and supporting each other. You will have the clinical freedom to work up your cases, and we will always encourage you to develop your skills and pursue your interests. If you want to take on a certificate, this will be fully supported.
Angela was born and raised in Zimbabwe. After graduating, she moved to the UK to further her veterinary training, working in Southampton before the call of the South West brought her to Devon. Together with her colleague and friends, Charlie and Janet, Angela started the practice in 2012. Angela has a special interest in internal medicine, and Charlie has recently moved away from clinical work to concentrate on the business and management side of the practice.
Senior vet Veronica emigrated here from Canada in 2020. She enjoys surgery, including orthopaedics and soft-tissue procedures like BOAS, and she is currently pursuing her surgery certificate. Michelle qualified from Glasgow in 2001. She enjoys being a GP vet and is particularly interested in internal medicine. Kate also graduated in 2001 and enjoys all aspects of small animal practice, especially surgery. She has completed the CertAVP. Veronica, Michelle and Kate are VetGDP Advisors and mentor our new graduates, Olivia and Paulina, who joined us in the Autumn of 2024. Eliza and Edd both graduated from Bristol in 2022. Edd joined us as a new graduate and Eliza a year later. Christa, who works with us part-time, started with us 8 years ago while also working as the vet at Paignton Zoo. She has a CertAVP in Zoo Medicine.
The practice has excellent facilities, including separate cat and dog waiting rooms and kennelling, two theatres and a dental suite with dental X-ray. We have all the usual kit, including digital X-ray, ultrasound, multiparameter monitors, and a fully equipped lab, including the Vetscan Imagyst. We also benefit from the expertise of visiting specialists, who assist with more complex orthopaedic and soft-tissue procedures, allowing us to keep the cases in-house.
We are a nurse training practice and have a fantastic nursing team of 11 RVNs, 3 night RVNs, 3 SVNs, and 2 VCAs, who are supported by our kennel assistants. Our Head Nurse, Vicky, and senior RVNs Hannah and Ashton keep everything running smoothly out back while our friendly reception team welcomes clients and manages the diary.
Here’s what our team says about Milestone Vets:
"Milestone is like my extended family. Everyone is so caring and thoughtful, and we all have the same vision of what is best for the pets. The directors really do look after their teams, and it feels like we are known individually and not just a number, and they genuinely care about their staff. Love Milestone with a passion."
“The vet team collaborates well. Everyone enjoys taking ownership of their cases, but there is always lots of input and support.”
“Milestone has been fantastic in enabling me to work hours that fit into available childcare and my husband’s work rota, which means I can contribute to the on-call rota while still maintaining a great work/family balance.”
“I have grown in confidence working here and enjoy being a vet again.”
“There is always laughter in the air.”
The rota
We understand the importance of work-life balance; that’s why we plan the rota in advance and strive to be flexible so everyone has time to enjoy their lives and hobbies outside of work. Our full-time vets work a 4-day week (8.30 am - 6.30 pm). We generally have 3 vets consulting and 2 vets operating daily, so support is always available when needed, and you can get involved with all aspects of our varied caseload.
We provide our own out-of-hours with a 1:8 nighttime rota and 1:4 weekends. The weekend includes Saturday (8.30 am - 3.30 pm) and Sunday (10 am – 12 pm) consults, which we try to keep free for urgent appointments. We have a dedicated RVN night team who take the on-call phone from 7 pm daily and triage calls. They are also on-site from 7 pm to 7 am to look after any inpatients and assist the vet. We have 2 vets on the OOHs rota each weekend, so you never have to work the full weekend. One vet works the Saturday on-call and Sunday daytime and has the following Monday and Tuesday off in lieu. The other will work Saturday daytime and Sunday on-call, with the following Tuesday and Wednesday off. You will also get a bonus payment for each OOH call attended at the practice and have one early 5 pm finish the following week.
Outside of work
We're a close-knit team who love spending time together outside of work. From our annual Christmas party night, complete with dinner and dancing, to dog walks, spontaneous drinks or planned events, everyone's always welcome to join in. Having a good work-life balance allows us to make the most of our beautiful location and enjoy everything the local area offers, whether heading to the nearby gym, joining the local choir or getting involved in outdoor activities like climbing and sailing. This is an excellent base for exploring Devon, with the coast, Dartmoor, and the city of Exeter all just 20 minutes away.
We offer:
- Salary of £45,000 - £70,000, depending on experience
- Relocation package available
- Holiday increases with length of service
- CPD encouraged, with certificates supported and funded
- Professional fees paid for RCVS, VDS, plus one other membership
- Employee Assistance Program with Bupa Wellness
- Visa sponsorship
