Job Details

Fancy a full-time role that is only 3 days a week and no OOH?

Valley Vetcare is all about the team, flexibility, and work-life balance, which is why we’re offering an unusual full-time rota so that you have the time and energy to enjoy life both inside and outside of work. Our vets and nurses are all long-standing because it’s simply a lovely place to work. Being an independent practice also means that we have the clinical freedom to ensure we offer our clients the best service and prioritise our team's well-being, which was one of the key reasons why Vincent set up Valley Vetcare.

The Team

The practice opened from scratch in 2014, and what started out as a team of 8 has now grown to a team of 21 and has just celebrated its 10th anniversary.

We are a team of four vets with a range of interests. Vincent was a clinical director at two hospitals before he established the practice in Rochdale with Hammad. His main interests are ultrasonography, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, and he is happy tackling most orthopaedic procedures. He also enjoys teaching and mentoring, and the practice has partnered with the new vet school in Lancaster (UCLAN) as one of their dedicated training practices. Vince has also just completed his Vet GDP advisor.

Richard, who has also been qualified for over 20 years, joined the practice shortly after it opened and has a keen interest in soft tissue surgery, internal medicine and endocrinology.

Helen saw EMS with us as a student, but unfortunately, there wasn't an opening at the time. After two years at a different practice, she joined the team in 2022. Helen is a great all-rounder but particularly likes neurology. She has just completed modules A and B of her cert AVP and is now deciding what she’d like to concentrate on in the final module.

Hammad works part-time at the surgery and enjoys all surgeries, with a particular interest in orthopaedics.

“I’ve been at Valley Vetcare for 9 years. It’s a great place to work - all the team get on with each other, and the managers are friendly, easy-going and approachable. Us vets work well together, and we are all happy to support and help our colleagues where needed. There is a good degree of clinical freedom, and we don’t have to stick to rigid protocols for what drugs we can prescribe.” Richard MRCVS

“I started as a student seeing practice at Valley. When the opportunity came up, I was excited to rejoin this stable, close-knit team and contribute to high-standard patient and client care.” Helen MRCVS

We also benefit from visiting specialists such as Ben Griffin of Vet Practice Support, who helps with more advanced ultrasonography and Hannah Stephenson, a cardiologist.

We have an amazing skilled team of 5 experienced RVNs to help the days run smoothly and provide the vets with fantastic support. All headed up by the brilliant Martyn, who recently helped Hannah, our SVN, become an RVN 😊

“I returned to work at Valley Vetcare after years away working with exotic pets. For me there was only one practice I wanted to work for. Valley Vetcare allows me to nurse the way I know best whilst pushing and supporting me to gain further knowledge & skills. I love the clinical freedom we all have and how the practice embraces new ideas whilst also keeping the fundamentals of being a friendly, caring, & close team”. Martyn Head RVN

We also have a brilliant team of ANAs, receptionists, and Sharon, our amazing practice manager, who has been with us since the start.

“This is the first place I've worked where I feel like I can completely be myself. We celebrate our differences and play to our strengths as a team. Everyone is approachable and willing to teach and learn from each other regardless of position. It's very much a positive, supportive work environment that motivates you to develop your skills” Louise Reception Team.

The team here has helped me overcome challenges and confidence issues. Never doubting me and giving me opportunities to do more. 2nd family! Amy ANA

The Role

We’re growing, and we’d love a 5th vet to join our team. We’re happy to support a new graduate or someone with experience looking to develop their career.

Work-life balance is paramount; we can be very flexible and are happy to work out a rota that suits you, including part-time hours, if you prefer. We have dedicated admin time built into the rota and proper lunch breaks.  Two of our full-time vets work a 3-day week, enjoying two totally free weekdays. Helen prefers to work four shorter days.

We outsource our OOHs to a local provider, Armac Vets, with whom we have a great relationship. Weekends are consulting only: 1:4 Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm, and Sundays, 10 am to 12.00 pm.

Outside The Practice

We are a sociable team who often get together outside of work, whether it’s for bowling, a curry or a cinema trip. Richard and Martyn are the active types who are often going cycling and hill walking. We’re lucky in Rochdale in that we are close enough to Liverpool and Manchester for a night out, but we’re surrounded by incredible countryside.  There is amazing hill walking, and for the adrenaline junkies, there are lots of high-octane outdoor and indoor adrenaline sports attractions.

  • A salary of £35,000 to £72,000, depending on experience
  • 6 weeks holiday, including bank holidays and your birthday off.
  • Flexible CPD allowance, standard £2500 with certificates supported and no cap on days or spend
  • Professional fees for RCVS, VDS, BVA, and/or BSAVA paid for
  • Private health care

If you want to know more about us and the role, call us for an informal chat or apply now.

The practice is an RCVS-accredited, independent, well-established, first-opinion, small animal practice. We opened in 2014 as a truly independent veterinary practice and strive to make your visit to us as stress-free as possible.

Located in the former public house, The Globe, the building has been extensively renovated, retaining many of the original features (including the bar, which is now the reception desk!).

Hammad, Vince, Richard and Helen are our Valley Vetcare vets – with over 45 years of experience between them. We are fully equipped to carry out medical work-ups and a variety of surgical procedures, including orthopaedics.
