Job Details

Would you like to work for one of the top independent award-winning practices in the UK?

Lanes Vets is a forward-thinking independent practice with a fantastic team. We were delighted and honoured to be one of three finalists in the 2023 Pet Plan Practice of the Year awards and to win the Vet Dynamics award for High Performing Team and Culture in 2023.

One of our fantastic vets is relocating, so we are looking for a small animal vet to join our close-knit, down-to-earth, friendly team, who are always eager to share their wealth of experience.

What our team say about us

“Having moved from equine to small animal practice, I was lacking in confidence and a little afraid of what would come… but Lanes Vets have made it so much easier. It’s such a lovely practice. The team is friendly and helpful, and management is very much involved and approachable. I have been supported very well and have learned so much already. I also have such a better work/life balance. They are very flexible and always try to accommodate requests. I honestly couldn’t recommend them more.” Francesca MRCVS

“I joined Lanes back in 2020 after leaving equine practice- with a view to finding another equine job quickly and moving on again. Three years later, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else! I have fallen in love with small animal practice, and that’s down to the amazing team and support at Lanes. The whole team all go out of their way to help and support their colleagues. I feel valued and respected at work and genuinely love the family feel. I’ve had directors come out late at night and early hours in the morning to help when I’ve needed extra support out of hours and have never been made to feel silly for asking for help.

Lanes are dedicated to helping to support our mental health and well-being, meaning flexible working hours are supported, and we all get a well-being allowance to spend outside of work on anything that helps us relax in our downtime.

I’m so grateful that my circumstances led me to a job at Lanes, and I’m excited for my future here as my personal progression is supported and encouraged. I couldn’t speak highly enough of Lanes and my experience working here as a vet!” Sophie MRCVS

Lanes Vets Ltd

Enough about us, what about the job?

We want everyone to enjoy their time at work. That’s why we’re committed to providing an inclusive working environment and a good work-life balance. Our full-time working week is split over 4 days, but we are more than happy to chat about part-time work or flexible working patterns to suit your needs.

We listened to our team and incorporated their ideas when we designed our out-of-hours rota, now a very civilised 1:16, where you will work a week block of nights only (no days at all) and a short consulting shift on Saturday morning. This means that there are no other nights in the rota apart from the 1:16 block. It’s what the team wanted and has been a great success; they love it! We are committed to providing exceptional care for our patients and clients, and our dedicated night nurse team triage all the OOHs calls first and provides inpatient care for our hospitalised patient. This means you can be on-call from home, and if there are no calls, you could potentially have an extra week off! The weekend daytime rota is also shared 1:16. Plus, after working a full weekend, you will have your next working day off and receive a TOIL day to take when you wish. The OOH rota is produced every December for the year ahead, and your day off is fixed every week, so you can plan and swap any shifts you might need to. An hour’s lunch break is the norm, not a rarity, as is finishing on time.

The role will be based at our Garstang practice, where our OOHs and inpatient care are based. As part of our journey to achieve hospital status, we are planning to expand the building to include more consulting rooms and an additional theatre and are discussing the logistics of a CT scanner.

We can offer the support and mentorship of our experienced team, which includes advanced practitioners in dermatology and surgery, certificate holders in internal medicine and Liv, who has an MSc in behaviour. We also benefit from visiting Royal College specialists in dentistry and surgery and a visiting advanced practitioner in Cardiology, who are always on hand with advice. All our clinics are fully equipped to a very high standard, and new toy requests are rarely refused.

Whatever your interests, we want you to have the opportunity to develop your own passion. We encourage further training and will be happy to support you to certificate level. Regular Clinical Club meetings (with chippy tea!) and SA vet meetings also offer the chance for us to meet and share our experience and knowledge with the team.

New graduate support

We have trained many new grads over the years, and our two VetGDP Advisors are ready and waiting to help the next new grad as they start their journey in practice. We offer so much support here, as well as time regularly scheduled on the rota with your VetGDP Advisor. You will also be assigned your own nominated Director when you join the on-call rota, and they will provide full backup for as long as needed. We also have a practice WhatsApp group specifically to support our new graduates, so there’s always someone available to ask for advice and additional support. We are also happy to discuss independent new graduate schemes.

What matters to us?

Team Well-being: Our team are everything to us, and everybody matters. We offer each team member an annual £50 well-being allowance to be used outside of work for whatever you fancy, whether that’s a relaxing spa day, exercise classes or learning something new.

Sustainability: We are always looking for ways to become more sustainable. Our ‘green team’ has already achieved the Silver Investors in the Environment award, and it shouldn’t be long before we also achieve the Green award. We have been busy planting trees at the practices and recycling everything we can. The hospital and one branch already have solar panels installed, and our uniforms are made from plastic bottles!

Community and giving back: We are always getting involved in the community, and each year, we pick two charities for our fundraising focus. Last year, we raised over £4600 for the North West Air Ambulance and Kidney Research UK by organising bake sales, a sponsored 23-mile walk, and our Bingo night. The Bingo night was a huge success, raising over £3,000 in one night, and we even ran out of room due to the overwhelming turnout! This year, we’re fundraising for St John’s Hospice in Lancaster and S.A.L.V.E International. We have lots of activities planned, including fun days, car washes, and sponsored walks. Of course, we'll need a bigger venue for another Bingo night after last year's success. We also offer ‘give back’ days, so if you’d like to volunteer or take part in a charity event, we’ll give you a paid day off to help a good cause.

Our social scene

One thing you don’t ever have to worry about at Lanes is our sociable side...we are always getting together. In the past, we have enjoyed ‘Lanes Fest’ (where we all camped and had a festival in one of the director’s gardens!) and the ‘Lanes Olympics’. We’re now busy making plans for this year’s summer event, which will have an eco-twist, and we'll get the whole team involved in the planning. We also throw notoriously great Christmas parties.
