Join a practice where your voice will be heard and your opinion valued, with lovely clients who voted us Best UK Vets 2021, 2022 and a special Elite Club award in 2023!!!

We’re looking for an additional vet to join our team at Cockburn Vets. We’re an independent, 8-vet, family-run, RCVS-accredited, small animal practice in the Heart of the National Forest. So, if you want to join a practice where your voice will be heard and your opinion valued, please read on.

We can support new graduates, and 3 of our team have the RCVS VetGDP advisor qualification. Our previous new grads, Caitlyn and Nick, are off to a flying start under their mentorship. We are also part of Vet Dynamics and Vetsure’s Graduate Friendly Scheme. For more experienced vets, we are happy to support someone looking to start a certificate in their area of interest.

Our team are amazing – and we are really proud of them. We support and play to each other’s strengths, allowing us to deliver the best possible care to our patients and their owners. We believe this incredible teamwork led us to win The Elite Club Award at last year's Best UK Vet awards. The Elite Award is for practices that have won the Gold Best UK Vet Award multiple times (we were Best UK Vets in both 2021 and 2022), and we were the first recipients of this special award. We’re looking forward to this year's award ceremony in June, as we’ve been short-listed for another award!

Work-life balance is essential to us, and the whole team collaborated to design our full-time rota, giving their input into the ideal working hours to allow life to be fully enjoyed inside and outside work. Our workday finishes at 3.30 pm or 4.30 pm each day for 3 weeks out of every six, and for the remaining 3 weeks, there is a late start at either 11 am or 12 pm. Time during the working day is allocated to allow phone calls to be made and to ensure everyone finishes on time. We even introduced a rule to help with this – no calls to be made to clients after 7 pm. Vets work 2 consecutive Saturday mornings in 6 weeks; you then have 4 completely free weekends. Saturday mornings finish at 1.30 pm (last appointment at 12.30), and phones go across at 1 pm. We have no Sunday or bank holiday surgeries, and our out-of-hours are looked after by a local OOH provider. As we can be flexible with working hours, we’re happy to consider full or part-time applicants.

This is how Kostas, one of our vets, described his time working as part of our team,

“For me, working at Cockburn Vets could (even) be described as a #vetlife-changing experience! If you are looking for a place to mould you as a Vet, strengthen your fundamentals and take you a step (or two) further, work with a (really!) wide variety of cases in a supportive and friendly, almost home-like, environment… well then Cockburn's is definitely the right place for you! In my six years of working at Cockburn Vets, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the experience made me a better, stronger and more equipped veterinary professional."

Kostas completed his orthopaedics certificate while with us and has recently established his own orthopaedic practice in Greece.

Kian has also loved his time here; this is what he had to say about working with Diane and the team:

“I joined Cockburn Vets as a second chance to my clinical career, being on the brink of giving it up for the foreseeable future. The opportunities that I have had to re-learn and develop my clinical skills have been endless, and the team are so supportive of it all. Working alongside you, discussing aspects of veterinary leadership in our one-to-ones and the opportunity to be a VetGDP advisor opened my eyes to the non-clinical aspects of the veterinary profession.

If I can even emulate the smallest bit of your leadership style, with its drive for progress, fairness and high standards, then I hope to make a positive impact on other people's lives in the same way you have done for me. Thank you so much for rekindling my clinical career and for lighting a fire on the non-clinical aspect.”

We believe personal and professional development are crucial and have built time for CPD into our rota. We have regular vet meetings and clinical clubs to discuss cases and share our experiences and knowledge gained from external CPD events. Our team members regularly attend BSAVA, BVA Live, and London Vet Show or other CPD courses of their choice. We’re also happy to support certificates.

We’re a Gold Standard Cat Friendly and Veterinary Nurse Training practice, and we’ve just applied for Dog-friendly certification. We like to keep up to date with the latest techniques, and our experienced team have the expertise to treat most cases in-house, enhancing our job satisfaction. We pride ourselves in providing innovative care such as laparoscopic spays and have lots of equipment, including blood pressure monitors in each consultation room; an in-house lab with blood and urine machines; an ultrasound with Doppler plus linear and cardiac probes; rhino-, broncho- and gastroscopes; and a dental generator situated in our separate dental theatre. When we need to refer, we have excellent relationships with our local referral centres. We are in the process of launching our new chronic pain clinic, which will be a great addition to the acupuncture and K-laser we already offer in-house.

We have a continuous improvement (CI) board where all team members post ideas to improve our practice (no idea is too small), and our vets have a budget to allow them to purchase equipment they feel would enhance our clinical services. Niyka has a Master's in clinical animal behaviour, and Diane, who never sits still, is always looking for ways to improve the practice. Hence, as well as being an Advanced Practitioner, she completed a Diploma in Veterinary Professional Services and a certificate in Veterinary Business Management.

We believe it’s essential to be sustainable, and we’re trying to make our practice greener through initiatives such as using Tuffies mattresses in all our kennels to reduce unnecessary washing. We are also working towards our Investors in the Environment accreditation.

We’re situated in a rural area in the heart of the National Forest, close to the Peak District, but we are fortunate to have the best of both worlds, with Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, and Derby just down the road. There are also excellent road, air, and rail links with central London only 90 minutes by train, and East Midlands and Birmingham airports are nearby. We’ve also just had a fantastic new leisure centre open within a stone’s throw from the practice.

Company

Cockburn Vets was established by Bob Cockburn in the 1930s. Since then, the practice has been an integral part of the community, caring for animals in the Coalville, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Shepshed, Market Bosworth and Markfield areas. Today Cockburn Vets remains a small family-run business committed to providing the best comprehensive care for your pet. We aim to deliver the highest standard of medicine and treatment techniques backed by exceptional service. Our team has a high level of expertise, and we invest heavily to keep our equipment and our team knowledge base up-to-date.

In 2021 we won the Best UK Vet Awards. This prestigious national award recognises those vet practices delivering the highest levels of service to customers. The awards, organised by VetHelpDirect.com, are based on genuine pet owner reviews of veterinary practices around the United Kingdom. Despite being such a challenging year for vets and pet owners because of the coronavirus pandemic, there were 14,299 vet reviews received, increasing 22% on the previous year – and the highest ever! Thanks to the lovely reviews left by our valued customers, we were delighted to be voted Best Vets in Leicestershire and Best UK Vets 2021.

That’s why at our Coalville vet surgery, you’ll find a traditional and friendly welcome for you and your pets alike – backed by attentive, empathetic care and the latest equipment for swift diagnosis and treatment in even the most complex cases.
