Millcroft 2

The Practice

We are a fiercely independent, six-centre, mixed practice in the western Lake District. We currently have opportunities for both experienced and new graduate small animal veterinary surgeons to join our friendly 27-vet team in a range of working patterns.

Millcroft Vets is a founding member of XLVets, a community of independently owned veterinary practices.

We are proud of our service and excellent purpose-built facilities which include digital x-ray, top-end video endoscopy, high-resolution ultrasound scanning, class IV laser, Tonovet tonometer and dental radiography. We  have certificate holders in cardiology, diagnostic imaging, exotics, medicine, emergency and critical care and surgery allowing us to provide comprehensive in-house and second opinion services.

Most importantly though, we have a great team of people who support each other to deliver excellent veterinary services to the local community 24 hours a day. The diverse team make up provides an excellent opportunity for vets at all stages of their career to develop and grow.

We’re situated in the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fantastic for walkers, kayakers, runners, climbers, paragliders and wild-swimmers.

The Role

Experienced vets

For experienced vets, Millcroft offers a package up to £70,000 dependent on experience and hours.

A 4-day week is standard for experienced vets, and there are options to increase salary or reduce working hours depending on your own personal circumstances. Consults are split into 15-minute appointments with scheduled breaks to allow time to catch up, report results or even have a cup of tea!

We have a shared small-animal only on-call rota which is currently 1-weeknight-in-8. Weekends are also shared and work out at 2.5 weekends in 10. To help recharge, we include a ½ day off following a night on call and a day off following a weekend on call.

Accommodation is always available at the practice for those who prefer to stay on-site for OOH and a dedicated RVN is on-site in the evenings providing triaging calls and managing inpatients until 10.30pm. After 10.30, a dedicated on-call RVN is available.

CPD is encouraged throughout the team, to further individual interests and support business development. It is funded to certificate, Masters or PGDip level for a long-term candidate.

New graduates

For new graduates, we offer a £36,000 package and enhanced CPD allowance to provide a position on the XLVets Small Animal Graduate Development Programme which includes;

  • Monthly meetings with an external XLVets mentor
  • 80 hours+ of external CPD spread over a year delivered by experts within the XLVets community
  • Lots of socialising with an XLVets peer group of other new graduates across the country.

New graduates are also based at our larger Cockermouth and Workington surgeries where there are large teams of vets and RVNs to provide plenty of support. Sole charge as a new graduate is neither fair, nor expected. We also start new graduates with 30 minute consults to begin your career.

A 4.5-day week is standard for new graduate vets to increase exposure for the first 12 months. As mentioned above, Millcroft have a shared small-animal only on-call rota at 1 weeknight in 8 with rolling relief when staffing arrives. Weekends are also shared and work out at 2.5 weekends in 10. Out of hours, a dedicated experienced vet is rostered on alongside your nights until you and the practice feel ready to drop the additional support. To help recharge, we include a ½ day off following a night on call and a full day off following a weekend on call.

Millcroft Vets is an approved graduate development practice with five registered vetGDP mentors who you will be paired with depending on location and clinical interests. We actively encourage mentorship within the practice by paying a bonus to our VetGDP mentors. Informal support from peers and directors are also available 24/7.

Due to our large team, availability of support, mentoring and caseload, we will make any new graduate a truly great vet.

Successful Candidate

We are looking for an individual that is passionate about veterinary medicine to join our diverse team. The individual must be an excellent communicator who has high emotional intelligence, to help them build rapport with customers by reading the situation and responding appropriately.

Given our location, we encourage applications from those who love the outdoors as they will not regret moving to the Lake District, a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

Our practice has deep roots in Cumbria with a history stretching back to the 1920s. Over that time, we have protected our independence, championed our values and provided care for our patients in the way that we think gives them the best opportunity for a happy and healthy life.

As we’ve grown and our facilities have expanded, we only bring people into our team if they’re a strong fit for those values. Everyone who works here is in the veterinary industry because they want to be – because we love our jobs and we love caring for animals and their owners.

And there’s something about the Lake District that gets under your skin because we all love our community too!

With our central hub in Cockermouth providing 24-hour emergency service and branches in Workington, Keswick, Aspatria, Maryport, and Egremont, all providing friendly, dedicated teams to their communities, we provide the best care we can to pets and their owners throughout the area.

Our current generation of vets, nurses, and support team professionals shares the vision and legacy of those who preceded them—to put the care of your animals first and foremost in the services they provide.
