Job Details

Working with our in-country partners in lower and middle income economies to influence and educate communities to improve equine welfare.

About Us

World Horse Welfare is a leading international charity that works worldwide. Through our projects, we are able to better understand the problems that horses and their owners are facing around the world.

Equines suffer every day due to a lack of appropriate care, difficult working conditions and no protection through laws. But we believe that change can happen. Each day, our teams work tirelessly to shine the spotlight on working equines to secure a future in which they do not have to suffer needlessly.

The Role

The role is UK based, working from home and/or at our Head Office in Norfolk but does require overseas travel. The Programme Officer responsible for Veterinary/Animal Welfare/Research is primarily a project management role that facilitates the implementation of our International programme ensuring that working equid welfare is improved in a contextually appropriate and effective manner. However, you will also be asked to advise on all issues that relate to the veterinary aspects of equine welfare. An important part of the role is the development of relationships with key stakeholders to raise the profile and enhance the charity’s reputation.

Successful Candidate

We are looking for someone with experience of working with people of different cultures and economic situations, who can take on management tasks and responsibilities. It is essential for this role that you are a qualified Veterinarian. You must have in-depth knowledge of equine health and welfare and be experienced in the daily management and handling of equines. You will have an interest and experience of leading research projects and have good oral and written skills. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders and be a realistic problem solver is also important.

The Package

Company

Our mission is to work with horses, horse owners, communities, organisations and governments to improve welfare standards and stamp out suffering in the UK and worldwide.

Founded in 1927, our approach to helping horses was based on four core principles, which we still hold today:

Relevance:
We believe that horses and humans have evolved a unique partnership and that horses have an important role in society which is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Whether working animals, family pets, equine athletes, conservation grazers or companions, horses contribute to our lives, cultures and economies. This partnership is right so long as people take full responsibility for their welfare.

Sustainability:
In all of our work we strive for lasting change, aiming to treat the source of a problem as well as the symptoms. .

Practicality:
We are a charity that believes in taking a practical approach to solving problems.  We focus our efforts on what is achievable, and part of our practicality is that we recognise the importance of working in partnership with others to create change.

Evidence and experience:
We base our work on scientific evidence and on our 90 years of horse care experience.  We also support research to improve horse welfare.
