It’s time to start living the high life…

If you’re a mixed or small animal vet looking to settle in the stunning Scottish Highlands, then look no further than Conanvet as the practice for you. We are a well-established (90+ years) independent, 14-vet multi-centre practice. Come and join us and experience the relaxed pace of life in this stunning part of the UK.

Directors Douglas and Mary-Jo (MJ) value the teams' work-life balance and understand that the ideal balance looks different for everyone. We are really flexible with the rota and will always try to make things work for everyone. As vet Helen says: “The key for me working here is the flexibility. I can work close to my home. I've got two young children, and I'm allowed to work hours that work around my day-to-day life.”

We are a really close team, and our vets genuinely enjoy working here; just ask Natasha, who joined us as a new grad in 2023 after graduating from Liverpool. She is now looking to buy a croft for her five horses and sheep, who all moved with her!

Heather, who joined us as a new graduate, had some kind words to share about her experience working with us before embarking on an exciting new adventure working at a game reserve in South Africa: “This is a fantastic practice with an amazing, hardworking team of people. Everyone is incredibly supportive, and there are plenty of opportunities to develop daily. Thoroughly enjoyable location with visits taking you to some beautiful locations across the highlands. Excellent mix of varied cases covering companion, farm and equine patients.”

We encourage everyone to follow their interests, so if you have a particular bias, we can absolutely support this. No two days here will be the same with our varied caseload, be it small animal consultations, operating, or equine and large animal visits all over this area of Scotland. After all, variety is the spice of life! As Lucy, one of our vets, says, “This is a true mixed practice”.

Whether you’re an experienced vet or at the start of your veterinary journey, our team can offer so much support, and not a single vet in the practice does any sole charge, no matter what level we are at. We are always happy to share our knowledge and work together to provide the best care for our patients.  We also have monthly clinical clubs and vet meetings to chat through any interesting cases, bounce ideas off each other, and raise any concerns we might have.

MJ is an equine practitioner certificate holder and one of our two VetGDP advisors, along with Serena. We love mentoring and helping less experienced vets build their confidence in all disciplines. Our new graduates from the last three years are still with us, so we must be doing something right!

We have a fantastic, experienced nursing team with certificate holders in anaesthesia, feline nursing, and behaviour. We also have two brilliant SQPs organising our rounds and providing excellent backup and communication with our diverse large animal clients.

We have two main surgeries in Conon Bridge and Dingwall and three smaller branches in Gairloch, Ullapool and Fortrose. Two branches are on the stunning west coast, and our vets love to consult here so they can grab a bite to eat at the renowned Seafood Shack in Ullapool.

We have some great kit to make life easier; we use DR X-ray for horses (sometimes cows and sheep, too) and CR X-ray for small animals; we have video endo- and gastro-scopes, 2 different ultrasound units and a dental suite with an IM3 digital x-ray. Meanwhile, our large animal side has a dedicated operating room for those springtime ovine caesars and occasional hernia op, two Easiscan rectal scanners, bull and tup semen testing kit and a state-of-the-art hydraulic tipper crush to simplify foot care, which can cope with the largest bulls.

Our full-time vets work a 4-day week, with three of the four days finishing at 5 pm. We include an hour of dedicated admin time, ensuring that you have the time to catch up on notes and make phone calls. Our out-of-hours rota is just 1:4, and our 2nd on-call system means there is always support and an extra pair of hands available when needed. If you’re a small animal vet, you would only need to deal with the smallies as we would arrange the rota so you are buddied up with a large animal vet.

We try to get together as much as we can outside of work (we don’t need much of an excuse for a get-together!) On top of the informal socials, like catching up over a delicious curry feast, we also have a great Christmas party and a summer BBQ to look forward to!

Despite the incredible rural scenery, we are really well located for travel links, with Inverness just a 20-minute drive away and the airport just 15 minutes further. Douglas has been known to finish consults in Ullapool and be on the ferry to Stornoway that afternoon!
