Job Details

Howells mixed practice is the hidden gem of the veterinary world.

At the turn of the millennium, Directors Mark and Christine Howells started the practice in the Old Police House in the Market Place before relocating in 2010 to purpose-built premises on the edge of Easingwold. Today, Howells Veterinary Services remains a forward-thinking independent mixed practice, with 21 vets and an excellent support team providing an exceptional standard of care to all species in our local rural community and far beyond.

Our caseload is truly mixed, treating small animals, beef and dairy cattle, sheep, commercial pigs and poultry, camelids and horses, ranging from large-scale farming enterprises to small holdings. Our farm work accounts for about 80% of our workload, and we have four vets working in the small animal department all day.  We are looking for a clinician with experience who will embrace the diversity of our workload. We have an excellent team and can tailor this role to your interests.

A degree of specialisation is encouraged, and knowledge sharing and learning are always ongoing. There is plenty of scope for personal development, with several team members studying towards further qualifications. Sara recently enjoyed MSD’s Swine University and finished the final study block at Penn State University in the USA. Katie is about to embark on a certificate in small animal dentistry, and we have several team members who already hold further qualifications. Amy is studying for a diploma in bovine reproduction.

Howells 01,02We have five directors. Mark leads the pig team and has been instrumental in developing our major agricultural supplies outlet. Christine runs the small animal department and is an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in small animal medicine. William leads the poultry department, and Luke runs our ruminant section.  All the clinical directors hold further qualifications in their fields, reflecting the practice's ethos. Pippa is the Director responsible for the dispensaries, stock, buying and warehousing and is a Registered Animal Medicines Advisor.

Paraprofessionals complement our service, undertaking TB testing, ultrasound scanning, freeze branding and foot trimming.

We have monthly early morning clinical meetings where vets present a condition or case for clinical discussion over breakfast.

Our full-time vets work a 4 ½ day week; the surgery is open from 8.30 am to 6 pm and 9 am – 1 pm on Saturdays. Vets enjoy a full weekday off every four weeks. We have a 12-week rolling on-call duty rota, and there are nine weekends out of every 12-week block where you will be completely off. Our emergency calls are handled by a third party who passes calls on to the duty vet. We operate a second call system for out-of-hours cover, supplemented further during our busy lambing times so that three vets are on duty. This enables us to provide backup as needed and an excellent service to our clients. Our nurses also work an out-of-hours rota, providing the duty vets with excellent support. A clinical director is always available for additional support.

All our vets currently work from our original York Road practice, which also houses our small animal department. A 500m walk down the road,  we have a very large, newly built dispensary and warehouse, along with our agricultural supplies business. We have a busy farm delivery service operating from this site.

Howells 03,04Our small animal department allows you to practise first opinion work to a good standard –we have a small lab, digital radiography (standard and dental), ultrasound including echocardiography, ECG, and a spacious theatre. Most importantly, we are supported by our excellent team of receptionists, nursing and administrative staff.

So, what makes us different? Here’s what some of our team can tell you…

“I have been qualified for 11 years and came back into mixed practice after being in farm-only practice for eight years. The majority of our vets are mixed, but everyone has areas of interest we are encouraged to pursue; I am looking forward to starting a master’s degree in ruminant nutrition in September. My role is majority farm with occasional days on small animals, and every vet’s workload is tailored to their preferences. It may seem daunting to cover all species out of hours, but there are always at least two vets on duty, and the practice owners are always available for support. Each day, everybody works together to get the work done. For the first time in my career, I can say that I finish work on time, and flexibility works both ways!” Leanne MRCVS

Ryan was with us for over two years before heading off to travel. Here’s what he had to say about his time with us: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working here, and the personal and professional development that has occurred during my time at this practice cannot be understated. It was my pleasure to be a part of an excellent working environment each and every day. The lessons I have learned here will be carried with me through both personal and professional aspects of life, and I will be forever grateful for this. I arrived as a veterinary surgeon low on confidence and unsure of my professional capabilities. With thanks to all the staff, I was made to feel very welcomed and gained confidence in medical, surgical and client communication skills. This position has taught me a great deal, and it feels like I am finally starting to reach my potential as a veterinary surgeon after years of hard work and study.” Ryan MRCVS

We offer a salary of up to £55,000, with a company car and a mobile phone for work use. We pay your RCVS membership fees and strongly encourage and fund CPD - we believe that what benefits your development is good for the practice, the clients and the animals we look after. Holidays start at 20 days, plus bank holidays, with a 4.5-day week; holiday entitlement increases by one day for every year’s service to 25 days. In addition, we give all our vets time off over Christmas/New Year to travel home to their families. We can sponsor visas and are more than happy to help with relocation should you need it.

We like to get involved in the local community, have stands at various shows throughout the year, and frequently talk to young farmers and school groups. We are currently sponsoring our local High School’s eventing team and support a different charity each year; this year, it is our local hospice and cottage hospital, St. Monica’s.

If visiting farms all week isn’t enough, our stunning countryside will draw you outside on your time off. We are a stone’s throw from the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty home to the famous Castle Howard. The North Yorkshire Moors are only a 20-minute drive away. We are 12 miles from the centre of York, and from there you can reach London or Edinburgh in 2 hours by train.

If you think we sound just like the practice you’ve been looking for, then why not drop us a line for an informal chat or apply now.
