Job Details

Coastal Vets is an independent, family-orientated 6.5-vet practice in Snettisham in beautiful Norfolk. We started as a purely ambulatory service but quickly outgrew this and needed to set up a permanent base. Since then, we have continued to grow both as a team and as a practice, completely rebuilding our premises in 2017 and opening a new branch clinic in Burnham Market. The branch is currently consult-only, with any patients needing hospitalisation being referred to our main practice.

We’re a friendly, close-knit team, and our vets have a range of experience, from recently graduated to 19 years qualified. Wherever you are in your career, we can offer you the right environment to progress, follow your interests and develop your skills with the support of our experienced vets and our fantastic 7 RVNs, 1 SVN, 1 VCA, and 5 receptionists.

“Since starting at Coastal Vets as a new graduate, the vets, nurses and reception team have all been extremely supportive during the early stages of my career. The ethos of the practice aligns with my values and enables me to work to the best of my ability. I cannot recommend Coastal Vets enough!” Alex MRCVS

“I’ve worked at Coastal Vets for the last seven years as their Head Nurse. The team is progressive and supportive, and we are encouraged to grow professionally and personally. The working environment is positive, and we enjoy building good client relationships.” Karen Head RVN

Our vets have a variety of interests, and we’re always happy to share our knowledge and expertise. Miriam has an imaging certificate, and Teresa is undertaking a cardiology certificate, so if you are looking to take on a certificate, this will be fully supported and funded. Alternatively, we are happy to mentor you if you need to build your confidence and experience in a particular discipline.

We are ideally looking for a vet with some experience but equally, if you are just getting started, Clare, our VetGDP advisor, enjoys teaching and has helped many new vets begin the veterinary journey. We can also sign you up for the Vet Dynamics Vet Graduate Academy scheme to run alongside the support of our team.

We’re also involved in the care of animals at the Hunstanton Sealife Centre and Norfolk’s Seal Rescue, which rehabilitates both common and grey seal species from Norfolk and the surrounding counties. This work brings an interesting dynamic to the practice and has seen us x-raying a penguin and operating on catfish, rays and even a shark.

Our new purpose-built premises are fully kitted out to enable you to work up your cases and treat patients with high-quality standard care. Our lead vet, Chris, likes new toys and is currently looking into a new cytology machine to join our current Idexx in-house lab equipment, which includes a urinalysis machine. Other facilities include DR digital x-ray, DR dental x-ray, ultrasound with colour flow Doppler and a Tono-Pen.

Our full-time vets work a 4-day week, with a set day off and 3 in 14 Saturday mornings (9 am to 12 pm). We’re really flexible with the rota, so if you’re looking for part-time hours or have other commitments to work around, we’re happy to chat about the options available. Our out-of-hours are outsourced so there are no on-call requirements. We are open from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm on weekdays, and our rota incorporates three types of shifts, which are equally shared. This includes an operating shift, consult-only shift and a mixed operating and consult shift, so there is plenty of opportunity to practice the skills you already have and expand those skills with the support of our team. If there’s a surgery you’re not confident with, Chris is happy to scrub in and mentor you to help develop your confidence.

We value your well-being, including ensuring your day is scheduled to provide dedicated time to catch up on phone calls, finish your notes, and take a break. As we started as an ambulatory practice, we still have clients who rely on us to make house calls. There is time set aside in the schedule for these three afternoons a week, with the house calls covered voluntarily, so whether you enjoy home visits or prefer to stay at the practice, we can accommodate this into your rota.

Norfolk is a truly special place of unspoilt charm and natural beauty, offering something for everyone, from the beautiful coastline to the stunning countryside of the Norfolk Broads and the historic medieval villages and towns. For those who love the outdoors, there are many places to walk or cycle, and there are endless beaches to relax and watch the sunset or enjoy more energetic activities like paddleboarding, kitesurfing and sailing.

Snettisham was recently voted Norfolk’s friendliest village, which offers a selection of small boutique shops, charming pubs, including the award-winning 14th-century Rose & Crown Inn, and lovely restaurants, one of which (The Old Bank) has been featured in the Michelin Guide since 2019. We are next door to a fabulous rewilding centre known as Wild Ken Hill, where Springwatch/ Autumnwatch has been filmed for the past few years. Snettisham also boasts its own beach, parkland and RSPB reserve, where you can see one of the north's most impressive winter spectacles as flocks of Waders take off in wheeling clouds, whilst huge flocks of pink-footed geese overwinter here, frequently flying in their hundreds right over the practice!
