Job Details
Animal Vets was started by Patrick, who settled in this beautiful corner of Cornwall after working in many other spectacular parts of the world but decided Cornwall was the place he wanted to make his home. Over the past 30 years, Animal Vets has seen many changes, but one thing hasn’t changed: we remain one of the only independent practices in this part of Cornwall. We couldn’t be more proud of our fantastic team of vets, nurses and support staff, who make our practice what it is today. Our amazing clients come from Lands’ End to the Lizard and St Ives to Newquay because they trust us to take great care of their pets.
Patrick's son, Jonathan, has now taken up the mantle as a vet and, like his Dad, also decided to travel the world where, along the way, he met his wife and fellow vet, Claire. Jonathan joined Animal Vets in 2007, and Claire followed in 2010, and now, they wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else and live in nearby St Ives with their three children.
As a practice, we are really dedicated to nurturing the future generation of vets and nurses. Claire, our Vet GDP Advisor, enjoys mentoring and has helped many new graduates take their first steps in practice. She also has a particular interest in medicine and imaging and plans to study for a certificate in the future. Jonathan enjoys all aspects of veterinary practice, especially surgery and dentals, but he has also taken on the business side of the practice and has been busy behind the scenes planning the move from our Carbis Bay site to new premises in Lelant. Kim particularly enjoys surgery; she originally joined us as a locum and never left! Cormac, a recent graduate, joined the team earlier this year. In his words this is what attracted him to the role “For me the biggest thing was the fact that it was a privately run and had a very solid and supportive team behind everything. It was really great to see that the team regularly meet up outside of work and after meeting them in person, it really showed how genuinely supportive everyone is of each other, and also having great banter!”
“I came to Animal Vets as a locum vet several years ago and never left. Although I'd been locuming for a long time, no practice ever made me want to stay much longer than the agreed time frame. With AVS, it was different, I felt part of the team from day one. The working environment is great. We have a lot of fun but equally work to a high clinical standard. What's probably most important for me is that AVS is a proudly independent, family-run practice. Clients and their pets aren't just numbers that you need to hit your target. This means great clinical freedom and a really rewarding place to work.” Kim MRCVS
“Starting my veterinary career with Animal Vets made me the vet I am today! The team took me under their wing from day one and quickly became like family, with endless support even at 3 in the morning. I was quickly exposed to a wide variety of cases and allowed good clinical freedom to fully work them up whilst having the experience and expertise of the team to call upon when needed. Working as part of a small team of vets means you quickly build good relationships with your clients, facilitating continuity of patient care. Outside of work, Hayle is an incredible place to live and explore. My four years with Animal Vets taught me a huge amount, and I will always look back at my time there very fondly.” Jemma Gough MRCVS
“I have worked at AVS for the past 9 years, and I love the way that working for an independent practice enables me to have flexibility with a young family. The whole team works together well, and everyone is like-minded and pushes for the best care for our patients. Monthly catch-ups give everyone the opportunity to discuss any new ideas for best practice. Working at AVS helped me gain my certificate in Anaesthesia, and management is always keen to support skills development.” Sarina, Head Nurse
Our vets work a 4-day week, with just 1:4 Saturday mornings (9 am – 1 pm). Our shifts are either 8-5 or 9-6. We’re a young team who values work-life balance and family. We don’t want anyone to miss out on those key moments and memories, so we will always try to be flexible with the rota when needed so you can make it to those important events.
We are an RCVS-approved nurse training centre, and our Head Nurse, Sarina, has over 15 years of experience and now leads our fantastic nursing team of 4 RVNs, 2 SVNs and 1 VCA. We are also certified as a general practice set out by the RCVS practice standards scheme.
We have excellent facilities and great kit. Last year, we refurbished our main practice in Hayle, installing a separate cat ward with Casco kennels, an ultrasound room, a dedicated x-ray room with a state-of-the-art DR machine, and a separate dog ward with walk-in kennels. We are now in the process of adding a third consult room. We were really excited to move our branch clinic in Carbis Bay, to new purpose-built premises in Lelant at the beginning of September 2023. The new clinic is consult-only, bigger, brighter and with separate cat and dog waiting areas as well as a dedicated nurse consult room and incredible views.
We all have a share of the consults and operating shifts, so you’ll have plenty of time to practice your skills and learn new ones. If you’re a recent graduate, we will make time for you to scrub in and assist with surgeries while you build your confidence. We are also happy to adjust the schedule to support your particular areas of interest, so whether you would prefer some extra surgical practice or would rather focus on medicine, we will always be flexible to support this.
We outsource our out-of-hours to a dedicated local provider, C-Vets, on weekends (6.30 pm Friday to 8 am Monday) and bank holidays. Our vets only cover the OOHs on Monday -Thursday, with a 1:4 share of the nights on-call. New graduates would only join this rota when they felt confident, and backup would be provided with either Jonathan or Claire being 2nd on-call. They are available for advice or hands-on support if needed, and there is always an RVN to assist.
We love getting together outside work, whether meeting for a meal or celebrating the festive season. We’ll be heading off to the CVA Ball (Cornwall Veterinary Association) in Newquay next month, which is always a fantastic night out and a chance to catch up with other practices and leave the scrubs behind for an evening!
Hayle is a great place to base yourself in Cornwall. It’s a haven for water sports enthusiasts; its 3-mile stretch of golden sand is perfect for surfing, wind sailing, kayaking and kite surfing. There are so many activities right on the doorstep, from cycling and walking the coastline to spotting seals at Godrevy Beach. Newquay Airport is just 40 minutes away, and there is a direct train to London Paddington from Hayle station.
We are offering:
- Salary of £35,000 to £65,000
- Accommodation available
- Five weeks holiday, plus bank holidays pro rata
- Flexible CPD budget – all up for negotiation and certificates supported
- Professional fees paid for RCVS, VDS and BVA
- NEST pension scheme
