Are you looking for a place where you can spread your wings, flourish and feel confident, knowing you are fully supported…
Shepherds’ Vet Centre is a friendly, independent, family-run practice in Worcestershire. Owners and vets, Graeme and Alison, are committed to providing a supportive environment. We can offer our team's expertise, a varied caseload, and the support of a dedicated mentor as you find your feet and get settled in. We will absolutely support you in following any areas of interest and developing your skills. We want this to be a practice where you can spread your wings, flourish, and feel confident to have a go, knowing we will be there to back you up.
We have a strong clinical team of 7 vets, 7 RVNs, 2 VCAs and 1 ANA, with a range of experience between 6 and 30 years, and a brilliant admin/reception team who keep everything running smoothly. The practice is very much part of the community, and we have fantastic, long-standing clients whom we love, BUT they are not always right, and we always support our fantastic colleagues. Our practice values are trust, courage, respect, and going the extra mile when possible.
Our vets have various interests and are always willing to share their knowledge and skills. Alison has an Advanced Veterinary Practice certificate, focusing on small animal medicine, which is one of her particular passions, along with imaging. Graeme is particularly interested in surgery, enjoying more complex procedures and orthopaedics, and he would be happy to mentor a vet with a surgical interest. Max has a special interest in dermatology, and Helen is passionate about providing fear-free care. Suzanne works with our night team, providing emergency out-of-hours care alongside Graeme, Max and Alison.
We encourage all team members to talk to us as soon as they have an idea or issue so things don't have to weigh on a colleague’s mind. We also have regular practice meetings and always have a bite to eat at the same time. We have a staff appreciation box, which might seem a bit corny but gives us a chance to share praise and appreciation for other members of the team, and we find it’s great for everyone’s morale when these are read out during one of our tea breaks.
What does our team say about us?
“I was looking for a friendly, independent practice for a long time. Somewhere where I can come to work with pleasure. I found that in Shepherds’ Vets. The management, nurses, vet techs, and receptionist could not be friendlier or more helpful. I am working with keen and knowledgeable colleagues who are always happy to help and support me. I was given the flexibility to work hours, which both suited me and the practice. This is the place I want and will stay in.” Max MRCVS
“I have worked at Shepherds’ for 5 years as Head Veterinary Nurse and thoroughly enjoy my role. The practice is forward-thinking and very well-equipped, with a varied and diverse caseload. There is the opportunity to get involved with complex surgical and medical cases with guidance from Graeme and Alison, who are always dedicated, helpful and supportive. We have a well-established and experienced team. The practice has a real family feel to it, with the team enjoying regular days and nights out, pub lunches and family playdates. I can honestly say this is the friendliest and most supportive practice I have worked in; with many wonderful colleagues I count as friends.” Sophie, Head RVN
‘’I've been working at Shepherds' vets for 18 years and have a role I love and thrive in. No matter what, you always have support and encouragement at Shepherd's Vets. Graeme and Alison are 100% committed and genuinely care about being involved in all areas of the business. They are approachable no matter what it is regarding.’’ Simone, PM Level 2 Manager
We are proud to be one of the first UK practices to achieve dog-friendly status from the Dogs Trust/BVBA Dog-Friendly Clinic scheme, having already been a fear-free accredited practice. We also have Gold ISFM cat-friendly status, are officially rabbit-friendly with Silver RWAF status, and are an RCVS-accredited practice.
Our purpose-built premises and facilities enable us to provide a high standard of care, with separate dog and cat wards, digital x-ray including dental x-ray, high-quality ultrasound with Doppler and cardiac package, in-house lab, endoscope, optic loop, Tonovet pen, cautery, and laser therapy. In a few months, we will be expanding our practice by adding an extra consult room, which will take us to four and enable us to support our growing client base.
We are looking for a small animal vet with experience to join our team. Our vets work a 4-day week, with one early finish each week and a 1:4 share of the Saturday morning consults between 9 am -12.30 pm. In lieu of the Saturday morning you work, you will also have a half day off. We are also happy to chat about part-time work too. There are no routine OOHs with this role; however, if you are interested in emergency care, we would be happy to discuss you joining the OOHs rota if this is something you would like.
We want to make sure you have time to do your job well, which is why we always stop for a tea break at 11 am, have time built into the diary for admin and phone calls, and book out the last appointment slot of the day to make sure we all get out on time. We’ll also make sure you get an hour’s lunch break each day, and on the rare occasion this doesn’t happen, you’ll get time off in lieu.
Our days are structured so two vets are consulting, one vet is operating, and one vet looks after medical cases and inpatients and helps with the ops if needed. Everybody has designated operating days at least once or twice a week, and plenty of time is built in for the more complex cases where you might want a second pair of hands scrubbed in.
What we do for fun
We love a good get-together outside of work all year round, not just for the yearly Christmas party! Whether hopping on a minibus to go to a comedy club, relaxing with a spa day or meeting up for dog walks, we always enjoy spending time together. We have even had our own ‘Shepherds Olympic Games’!
The local area
Kidderminster is a traditional market town famous for its quality carpets 😂. However, if visiting the only carpet museum in the UK isn’t your idea of a good time, there are plenty of other things to do! There are oodles of places to explore either on foot or bicycle, as Kidderminster is surrounded by beautiful countryside, including the Malvern Hills, Clent Hills, Kinver Edge and Wyre forest, and historic villages like Bewdley and the city of Worcester. As the district's retail hub, there are also many independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants to visit and good transport links to Birmingham and London.
