Time to ditch the stress? Embrace a new, relaxed way of life with stunning views, a supportive team and a fantastic work-life balance with no routine weekend consultations.

Ben Nevis Vets is a 3-vet mixed practice and is the only independent vets in beautiful Fort William, in the western Scottish Highlands. We pride ourselves on providing high-quality, affordable veterinary care to our loyal clients. Our caseload is a mix of mainly small animal, with some small holdings of cattle and sheep, some larger estates and the occasional equine call. As we continue to grow, we want to expand our vet team. Whether you’re an experienced vet or new to the profession, we would love you to be part of our supportive team, where we will always encourage you to follow your interests. If large animal work is your passion, there is potential to increase the caseload.

About our Vet Team

Since graduating from Edinburgh in 1988, Kenny has worked as a mixed animal vet in various locations in Scotland and spent a year in New Zealand before settling in Fort William.  Cheryl grew up in California and attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on the island of St. Kitts. Her love of travel and seeing new places brought her to Fort William in 2013, where she met Kenny. After working and travelling together in Scotland and Northern England, they set up Ben Nevis Vets in 2021 to offer their own brand of veterinary care in Lochaber and raise their family in this beautiful part of the world.

Kenny has a wealth of experience and likes all aspects of mixed practice. He particularly enjoys surgery and is able to undertake some orthopaedic procedures in-house. He has also completed his small animal surgery certificate.  Cheryl has certifications from the Chi Institute and The International Academy of Veterinary Chiropractic in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Acupuncture and Veterinary Chiropractic Therapy, respectively. Sarah graduated from Edinburgh in 2001 and worked in mixed practice before taking a career break to complete her PhD and raise her family, where she somehow also found time to complete a PGCert in Conservation Medicine. She joined us in 2022 after spending three years as an OOH vet in Falkirk. Here’s what Sarah has to say about us:

“Working at BNV means fantastic colleagues, generous support and really lovely clients. For me, returning to day practice after time in research, full-time parenting and then OOH was a little daunting, but I was made to feel welcome immediately. I love that I have the clinical freedom to pursue things that interest me while also knowing I can ask for support and advice when I need to. We have good kit and facilities, and our generous consult times mean we can build really great relationships with our clients. Overall, I feel valued, supported and encouraged at BNV, and working in the outdoor capital of the UK, with a view over Ben Nevis, is just the icing on the cake.”

We also benefit from the services of peripatetic vets from Surgeon On Site, a mobile service that visits to perform more complex orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries. They are always happy for you to scrub in to develop your own knowledge and skills at any stage of the procedure.

Work-life Balance and Rota

We really value our team’s work-life balance, so our vets work a 4-day week with no routine Saturdays or Sundays, giving you plenty of time to explore the beauty of Scotland. Consults are a relaxed 30 minutes each, so you can work up your cases properly without feeling rushed. We have built-in admin time and finish consults at 4 pm (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) or 5 pm (Tuesday and Thursday), so there’s always time to catch up on admin or make phone calls and still get out the door on time. We also make sure everyone gets a proper lunch break, where you can pop over the road and walk your dog on the beach.

We are happy to support new graduates, and Kenny is completing the VetGDP Advisor training. He really enjoys teaching and mentoring less experienced vets in all aspects of mixed practice. We start our new grads off shadowing one of the vets; this gives you time to find your feet and means someone is always available to offer advice or scrub in on an op.

Equally, if you are an experienced vet, this is a lovely area to settle and make your home, and there are real partnership prospects with us. We are also happy to talk about a part-time role.

As we’re a rural community, we offer our own out-of-hours service to our clients. Our OOHs workload is generally quiet and our rota is just 1:4 at weekends and a weeknight. Please don’t let the on-call be a deal breaker, we’re open to chatting about it. Kenny provides backup for new graduates and less experienced vets and is always happy to offer advice or provide an extra pair of hands when needed. Our wonderful nurses are also available to assist.

We enjoy getting together outside work and make the most of our stunning surroundings, from dog walks and enjoying the views to park runs or hitting the local climbing wall. For the more adventurous, how about joining Kenny for the Ben Nevis race? - a 14km mountain race from the foot of Ben Nevis to the top and down again! Whether we meet up for drinks or a meal, have a quiet night in or try something different like axe-throwing, we always have fun together.

Fort William is set amidst some of Scotland's most breathtaking landscapes, including Ben Nevis, Glencoe, and Loch Linnhe, and is a hub for outdoor activities. The possibilities are endless, whether you enjoy hiking, climbing, kayaking, or skiing. Fort William offers a relaxed pace of life with a friendly and welcoming community. There are also numerous festivals and events throughout the year. Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, is just 1.5 hours away, and you may even spot the Loch Ness Monster on the way! For travel further afield, there’s either Inverness Airport or Glasgow Airport not too far away.
