Job Details

We are looking for a vet to work at our East Grinstead branch, full or Part-time, flexible working week. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, £40,000 to 60,000 per year, full-time equivalent, as well as opportunities for professional development.

About Us

We pride ourselves on being innovative and forward thinking, updating our protocols based on the current evidence-based medicine and in house audits. We embrace new technology and have access to Vet CT, which we discuss as case studies in regular meetings to keep the whole team up to date.

We are fortunate to have a team of highly skilled Registered Veterinary Nurses who run their own clinics. Some hold certificates in anaesthesia, emergency medicine and surgery, which allows the practice to provide a wider range of services to our patients.

We have a comprehensive training programme for new graduates and student nurses. Each graduate is assigned a vet GDP mentor who will help them learn and develop their skills. We are a nurse training practice; student nurses also have their own clinical coach who provide support and guidance.

We are fortunate to have a team of long-term, loyal staff members who are committed to providing the best possible care for our patients. If staff members move on, it is typically to pursue non-clinical opportunities within the veterinary profession. The work environment is supportive and positive, with compassionate leadership.

Portland Vets Ltd

The Role

Our shifts are 8 or 10 hours, with the vets at East Grinstead and Edenbridge working 8-hour days and those at Horley working 10-hour days. However, we are flexible and can accommodate different schedules. Our East Grinstead practice has a team of 6 veterinarians and 7 nurses, while our Edenbridge practice has a team of 3 veterinarians and 3 nurses.

Our East Grinstead branch is where we provide overnight inpatient care. Our vets work a late shift to care for these patients and see emergencies up until 10pm. This allows us to work up and treat most of our cases in-house. There is good communication between all of our branches so that the continuity of patient and client care is maintained to a high standard. Our Edenbridge clinic is unique in the area for having a cat-only clinic on site adjacent to the main practice. We are a gold standard ISFM cat-friendly practice, demonstrating we are committed to providing the highest quality care for our feline patients. Our shifts are made up of consulting, surgery, and inpatient care. Consults are 15 minutes long, but 30-minute consults can be booked for more complex cases such as dermatology and up to 1 hour for euthanasia consults. We book consults in a mindful way and make sure to provide time for admin, which is monitored and protected. We utilise Petsapp to allow easier communication with our clients.

We carefully schedule surgical shifts to ensure that there is enough time for each procedure and that everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow. We also book extra help if needed, to ensure that all surgeries can be performed safely and efficiently.

As an employer, we are committed to promoting and protecting the physical and mental health of all our staff.

If you are a kind, caring, and forward-thinking individual who is looking for a rewarding career in veterinary medicine, we encourage you to apply for this position.

Portland Vets is an independent veterinary practice with three locations across West Sussex, Kent, and Surrey.

As well as serving pet owners in East Grinstead, our main vet practice on Portland Road is also ideally located for pet owners in Felbridge, Ashurst Wood, Forest Row, West Hoathly, Turners Hill, Ardingly, Crawley Down, Copthorne, Newchapel, Felcourt, Lingfield, and Smallfield

About our practice

We’re extremely proud to be the only family-owned non-corporate vets in East Grinstead and Forest Row. Our independence enables us to put your pets at the heart of everything we do and provide the highest level of care.

As well as our independence, balancing growth with retaining that personal feel has always been very important to us. We are constantly evolving and introducing new techniques, equipment, and software, but we strive to retain a strong relationship with our clients and their pets. The practice is still small enough to see the vet of your choice and we actively encourage this for continuity of care.

We also like to get involved with events and issues within our local community.

Caring for your pets since 2004

George and Jenny Christopherson opened Portland Road Vet Surgery in May 2004 after falling in love with, and converting the beautiful 1890’s house in Portland Road to a modern specialised Veterinary Practice.

They came to East Grinstead with the vision of opening a high standard, friendly, caring, veterinary practice for the four-legged (and less) members of the family, and are very proud of the high level of service and expert care Portland Vets is now able to offer its clients.
