Would you like to work for a multi-award-winning practice with an amazing team and great rota?

All About Us

We are expanding our team and are looking for a small animal vet, either full or part-time, to join us here at Stanley House. As a practice, we love what we do and pride ourselves on our excellent patient care and high-quality service to our patients and clients. Our ethos is very simple - we want people to be happy at work, so if we can improve one of the team's lives and make it work, we do it. Most importantly, we are a work family; there is so much respect between the team, we all like each other, and everyone looks out for one another. That’s probably why so many of our colleagues have been with us for a long time, and we have a very low staff turnover; ask Robin, who spent 34 years with the practice before retiring but couldn’t stay away, so he’s now back working one day a week! We are also very lucky to have Liz, our amazing practice manager (who has been with us for almost 28 years), everyone’s ‘Work Mum’, who checks in on us all and always ensures we’ve all taken a proper break and are OK.

Stanley House started in 1911, and now we are an award-winning, multi-site practice with our main small animal clinic in Colne, branch surgeries in Burnley and Barnoldswick (consult only), and our farm and equine clinic in Higham. We were very honoured to have won the Pendle Employer of the Year in 2016 and runner-up in 2018 (the awards have not taken place since). We are so very proud of this award because it was all about what our team said about us. We have also been highly commended twice in the SPVS (The Society for Practising Veterinary Surgeons) Wellbeing Awards. In a recent b-Heard colleague engagement survey, our team rated us in the ‘outstanding to work for’ category.

Stanley House Veterinary Group

There is lots of experience within our team of 15 small animal and 8 farm & equine vets, and someone is always on hand to discuss a tricky case or offer advice and support. We want you to pursue your interests and develop your skills. CPD is actively encouraged, and certificates are supported. Many of our vets have either completed or are studying towards certificates in various fields, including surgery, ECC, pharmacology, dermatology, dentistry, and three in medicine. We also have an advanced veterinary practitioner, and one of our vets is currently undertaking a master's in animal behaviour.

What our team say about working at Stanley House

‘’Having started as a new graduate and progressing year on year through to now being a team leader, I can't imagine working anywhere else. I know I can call on colleagues for support and advice, and I would trust any of my peers with the care of my own animal. I'm proud to recommend the practice to new potential clients because I know they will receive excellent care. There's a range of experience, knowledge, and skills within the team and opportunity to develop personal areas of interest.’’  Yana MCRVS

‘’I've worked at Stanley House Vets for almost 10 years now, after working at a few other practices since qualifying in 2009. The time has gone so quickly as I genuinely enjoy working here, and it doesn't feel like a 'chore' going to work. The entire team, from receptionists to nurses to vets, are all so lovely, and everyone works well together as a team. Everyone strives to give the best client and patient care; for us, it’s not just a job! The day-to-day workload is varied, and we all have the opportunity to get involved in all areas of the veterinary workplace. The management team are also extremely supportive, and there are ample opportunities to further progress your career with CPD and certificates.’’  Natalie RVN

‘’I joined Stanley House as a new graduate vet shortly after finishing university. The team has made me feel so welcome since I’ve been here. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive environment. There are always plenty of vets available to speak to with a lot of experience in different aspects of veterinary.’’ Ben MRCVS

I started working for Stanley House Vets in 2011 as an RVN just 5 months after qualifying. The whole team made me feel so welcome. We really are such a close-knit practice. The caseload that I have seen in my time working here has been very rewarding, as we all strive to work to the highest standard.’’  Emma RVN

‘’We all keep busy at Stanley House but what a fantastic company to work for. People are always on hand to help, senior staff are always up for discussing cases, and I cannot believe how understanding and flexible the team have been when needing time off for personal reasons. The clients are super friendly and make the job fun. Vet life can be stressful but the staff and clients make sure you're always supported, even when things don't go to plan. Thanks to all the Stanley House staff for working with me and making me a better vet every day’’. Catherine, MRCVS

Award-winning facilities

We love our work environment and were delighted to win the BVHA (British Veterinary Hospitals Association) design award in 2019. Our facilities are excellent; the clinic at Colne has recently undergone substantial renovations, hugely increasing our workspace, and we now have 5 consulting rooms, 2 theatres and separate dental and diagnostic suites. We have separate waiting rooms and medical and surgical wards for cats and dogs and are an ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic. We also have state-of-the-art equipment, including DR and dental x-ray, multiparameter, ECG, flexible endoscopes, ultrasound, tonometer, infusion pumps and a well-equipped lab. We are always investing back into the practices and our Burnley site has had a £100k makeover this year!

Great Rota

It is very important to us that our team are happy at work and enjoy a good work-life balance, and with their help, we have worked to develop the best rota possible. This is a full-time role, but we are always happy to adjust your hours to ensure you have a good work-life balance.

Our full-time vets generally have only two late finishes per week, finishing at 7pm. However if you are on a late shift, you will only start at 11am or 1.30pm that day. Generally, if you are on call then you only start at 1.30pm and have the following day off to rest.

We have also built in a ‘flexivet’ (an extra vet), which has allowed us to build in plenty of time for admin and phone calls. The on-call rota is 1.5 in 8 weekends and one weeknight every other week, with a bonus paid for each client seen. Out of the 8 weekends in the rolling rota, you have 6 totally undisturbed weekends, and you only work two 5-day weeks; the others are either 3 or 4-day weeks. We can be very flexible however and if you’d like to only work a 4-day week, this can absolutely be accommodated. This 8-week rolling rota means you can plan your life well in advance.

When you do your on-call during the week, you always get the day off after. You get Monday and Tuesday off when you work a Friday and Sunday on-call. When you work a Saturday on-call, you get a Friday off to give you a long weekend.

We also have a team of dedicated night nurses from 7.30 pm to look after the inpatients and to answer and triage any calls, ensuring you’re only called in when needed.

New Graduate support

We have two VetGDP Advisors, Leanne and Yana, ready and waiting to help less experienced vets build their confidence as they start their veterinary journey. Yana started with us as a new graduate 4 years ago and is now our graduate team leader. During OOHs, new graduates shadow one of the directors for the first few months, then they switch, and the director will continue to shadow the new graduate until they are totally confident with on-calls. New vets also don’t go to our branches until they are ready, and we adjust the consultations to take the pressure off our younger/ new vets. We also offer a new graduate development programme, which includes the opportunity to spend 2 weeks working abroad at a neutering clinic. Ben recently headed off to a neuter clinic in Thailand, and we couldn’t send him all that way without the opportunity to see the sights, so we tagged 2 weeks' holiday to the end of his stay so he could travel. We have also partnered with UCLan to help train veterinary students in both the large and small animal teams.

What we get up to outside of work!

We love getting together outside of work, whether it’s for our summer BBQ, getting competitive at the local pub quiz or dinner and dancing at our Christmas party. We always have fun and make memories to keep us laughing all year round. We love raising money for good causes, and we regularly take part in charity events; we have completed both the Lancashire and Yorkshire 3 peaks, a guide dogs challenge, and we also take part in the annual Pendle pub crawl – a 13-mile walk with 13 pubs for refreshments along the way!!

What’s it like around here?

If you are not from the area, Pendle is a lovely part of the country in the Northwest of England, nestling between the Ribble Valley and the Pennine Way. The Forest of Bowland, an area of outstanding natural beauty, is on our doorstep, and the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, and Bronte Country are all within easy reach. We have two golf courses in Pendle and a sailing club on Burwains reservoir. The area is fantastic for cycling, walking, and running, and for footie fans, we have the infamous Burnley football team – we just won’t mention their Premier League standing! For people who enjoy the City life we are also within easy reach of Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, which all offer excellent shopping and nightlife.
