Are you looking for a more relaxed pace of life? Then join the supportive team at Parley Cross Vets in beautiful Dorset, where you can enjoy an excellent work-life balance with a 4-day week, just 1:4 Saturday mornings and no OOHs.
We are a family-owned, independent small animal practice based in the heart of West Parley in Dorset. We’re so proud of our amazing team and the outstanding care we provide to our patients and clients, but it’s not just about taking care of the animals; it’s also about taking care of each other and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. We believe in fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and encouraged to grow and flourish, and this is achieved by looking out for one another and celebrating each other's successes.
Kevin, our lead vet and owner, graduated from Glasgow in 2001 and started his career in mixed practice on the Isle of Man. The plan was always to set up his own practice, and with a young family, the lovely village of West Parley, with its community feel, was the perfect place to set down roots. We opened Parley Cross Vets in 2012 with Kevin as the only vet. Since then, we have grown organically thanks to both our location on the edge of the South East Dorset conurbation area and the Covid puppy boom. We are now a 2/3 vet practice, looking to expand to 4 vets.
Kevin is a great all-rounder who enjoys soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, undertaking procedures such as BOAS, patella luxations and cruciate repairs in-house. Dagmara first locumed with us before joining the team in 2019 and she has a particular interest in dentistry.
“I've been working at Parley Cross Vets for over 3 years. It's a lovely place to work. Located in the centre of beautiful Dorset with fantastic outdoor activities on their doorstep, they offer an excellent work-life balance. Since I started, I've always felt welcomed and accommodated. The practice is family-owned, very friendly, supportive and passionate about their work. The caseload coming through the door every day is varied, you have complete clinical freedom but with support from an excellent referral hospital if needed nearby. Having stayed in the flat above the practice with no need to travel at all is bliss!!” Dagmara MRCVS
“What attracted me to working here is the fact it is a family-run business. When I first started, I felt very welcomed, it was full of smiles, and there was great communication between the team. The clients are lovely, and you get to spend time with their animals rather than rushing everyone out of the door ready for the next appointment. We have a good relationship between the team, clients and patients, and everyone is eager to assist in any way they can to ease the workload.” Rachel, Head RVN
Our fabulous nursing team is led by Rachel, our Head Nurse and clinical coach, who will support our SVN Amber as she starts her nurse training. RVN Jeni is our newest addition and brings over 20 years of experience with her. Practice manager Kirstie looks after us all and she is supported by our lovely receptionists Stephanie and Hayley. Hayley has also trained as an ACA and is always on hand to support the nursing team too.
Our full-time vets work a 4-day week (8.30-6.30). We schedule our days to include a mix of consults and surgery so you will have the opportunity to practice and hone your skills. We have time built into the day to catch up on admin, make phone calls and have a proper lunch break. Our Saturday rota is just 1:4 mornings only (9-12), but don’t let this be a deal breaker, as we can be really flexible with the rota, so if you have other commitments to work around, we’re happy to chat about the options available. Our out-of-hours are outsourced to Vets Now in nearby Wimborne, so your nights, Sundays and bank holidays are free.
We’re a friendly team that loves socialising in and out of work. We have monthly practice meetings, where we all get together over lunch to discuss cases and talk through any concerns, and we’re always open to new ideas and ways to improve our services. Outside of work, we’ll use any excuse for a get-together, whether meeting up for a meal or drink to celebrate a birthday, going out for a dog walk or enjoying the sunshine at our summer BBQ.
We also enjoy being part of the local community and getting involved in events, including dog shows, school talks and fundraising. We do a lot of work with the local Cats Protections and the Staffie and Stray Rescue, so the majority of our caseload is cats and dogs, with the occasional small furry. Last year, two of our nurses took on the challenge of walking a marathon pier to pier along the coast to raise funds for the rescue centre's kennels.
“Parley Vets have been the vets of choice for Staffie and Stray Rescue for a few years now. We are so lucky to have found them. Kevins' expertise, coupled with compassion, alongside the girls, makes for a formidable team, who, despite our dogs yet to find homes, treat them like we do, as well-loved family pets. They are ALWAYS there for us through the smiles and tears of rescue, and we are so very thankful.” Staffie and Stray Rescue
