Job Details

Alma Veterinary Surgery is a long-established and proudly independent practice in Scarborough.  Many of our team have been with us for decades or have known us since they were students, which could be down to our ethos of making sure all the team has the support they need to achieve a happy work-life balance. We have a good reputation locally for high standards of care with a ‘down to earth’ approach.

Our director Heather has worked at Alma since 2000 and though she never planned to have her own practice, she found herself taking ownership in 2020 when the previous owner retired. As she says “When I bought the practice I did so because of the team. I had no family in the area so this was like a little family to me and I wanted to keep it together.” Moving forward, Heather is determined to keep Alma independent so that the whole team has a voice and continues to have input into any decisions and how we drive the practice forward. We’re always open to new ideas to improve and expand the services we offer and we also have space to grow new services if you have a particular interest you’re looking to pursue.

Since 2020, Heather has been focused on making changes that improve the whole team’s work-life balance. We now close for lunch to make sure everyone gets a proper break and we have our own dedicated night service so there are no nights, Sundays, or bank holidays for our day vets to work. This also means we get to keep the interesting cases in-house. We have all the usual kit including ultrasound with cardiac capabilities, digital x-ray, dental x-ray plus our brand new dental machine.

Alma Vets 01,02We’re a really supportive team who are always happy to help each other out, share knowledge or chat through a difficult case. We all have our own strengths and interests and we learn so much from each other. We are ideally looking for a vet with some experience and can offer you the clinical freedom to work up your cases and follow your interests. Heather is our VetGDP advisor and loves mentoring so if you’re looking to develop your skills or gain confidence with a particular surgery, this is the ideal place for you.

Amy originally joined us as a student before spending 6 years working in America. We were so pleased when she came back to us in 2021, bringing lots of experience to the team. Amy has a particular interest in dentistry and is our resident queen of surgical extractions! Rosie is a great GP vet with 20 years of experience and Callum first visited us for his school work experience then during his EMS training, before becoming part of the team when he graduated in 2022.

Callum has been lured away by love and is relocating, so we’re now looking for a 4th vet to join our little family where you will be supported by Maria, our practice manager, and our fantastic nursing team led by RVN Jo who was recently recognised by the RCVS for her achievement of 30 years as an RVN. Jo also received the BSAVA Ray Butcher Award in 2021 for her significant contributions made to animal welfare in the community.

This is what Beatriz one of our former vets had to say about her time with us:

"I enjoyed every day spent working at Alma Veterinary Surgery and I was extremely sad to leave. I am so grateful for the opportunity the practice gave me and I can't thank them enough for all their hard work, patience and support.

At Alma Vets you can develop your skills, you can come up with new ideas and feel supported, and everyone works as a team. Heather is so supportive and approachable, and the team of nurses and receptionists are so knowledgeable and dedicated; but above all you will gain a little family for life!

I have been suspicious of employees' testimonials before, so if you are thinking "If it’s that good, why did she leave?" Trust me, it was no easy decision, but I moved closer to home (because home is where your heart is, right?).

To anyone looking for a great job, please have a look at this role or call to find out more about the place or team. If you're on the fence, then just do what I did almost 3 years ago and TAKE THE JOB! I can promise that you won't regret it!!” Beatriz Miranda MRCVS MSc

Our full-time vets work a 4-day week. We're really flexible with our rota so whether you’re looking for full or part-time hours, we’d love to chat about the options available. Our Saturday rota is just 1:4 mornings only (8.30am - 1pm) and you’ll get a full day off in lieu of the Saturday worked, plus an extra half a day off each month.

We’re always keen to get everyone out the door on time and have scheduled our days to make sure this happens. Our standard shift is 8.30am to 5pm, so most days you’ll be out the door at 5pm. Our phones go through to the emergency service when we close for lunch and at 5.30pm each day. Once a week you will work the ‘duty vet’ shift (8.30am - 6pm), taking the phone and dealing with any urgent cases that need to be seen.

Alma Vets 03,05When you are not at work, an excellent quality of life is guaranteed by affordable housing and local attractions including beautiful sandy beaches, tiny fishing villages, Dalby Forest, the North Yorkshire Moors and Wolds, the historic city of York, and the seaside town of Whitby. Our team enjoys many hobbies and outdoor pursuits including cycling, running, horse riding, walking, rugby, water sports, baking and music. In Scarborough, there are great places to eat out, popular acts in the Open-Air Theatre and the Stephen Joseph Theatre is just around the corner. We also like to make the most of our location by taking the dogs for a walk and having a picnic during our lunch breaks.

The package:

  • Salary of £36,000 - £53,000
  • Christmas bonus
  • 5 weeks’ holiday plus bank holidays
  • Generous CPD with no set limit - all reasonable requests considered
  • Professional fees paid for RCVS, VDS, BSAVA, and BVA
  • Assistance with accommodation if required
  • Future potential for a directorship as we have no intention of joining a corporate
  • Sponsorship available
  • Employee assistance program provided by Avensure
  • Generous staff discount
