Join our forward-thinking practice with a fantastic team and big plans for the coming year.

We’ve built a lovely practice with great facilities and regularly receive excellent feedback that we’re an easy-going and nice bunch to work with. We have exciting plans to expand the practice significantly early in 2024 and would value your input and ideas as we progress to achieving hospital status.

Practice Culture and Ethos

Huw, our practice partner, completed his certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2001; following this, he worked for five years as a surgeon in a busy London hospital before opening his own practice in 2007. Huw wanted the autonomy to develop a practice where people enjoy continually learning and improving, where their voices and ideas can be heard. It started small, but we are now a team of 38, including 8 vets, 7 RVNs, 3 SVNs, and 4 VCAs, plus our fantastic client care and administration teams. The original practice ethos has remained the same, always moving forward and looking at better ways of doing things, listening to new ideas and developing together as a team. Regular clinical meetings are important to us so we can audit our work, discuss our tricky cases, and share knowledge. Once a month, we have smaller team meetings and then come together to have lunch and celebrate our successes. We award monthly client service champions for the colleague who’s received great feedback from clients and a colleague of the month nominated by the team. We also like to lead the way, and we’ve recently been awarded Green Status (the highest award achievable) from the Investors in the Environment – we were (and possibly still are) the only first opinion practice in the UK to be given this!

Our Team

Our vet team have a diverse array of talents and interests. Huw’s main clinical interests are surgery, laparoscopy, and orthopaedics, and he takes referrals from surrounding practices. He also enjoys mentoring less experienced vets. Matt, our Senior Vet, has been qualified for over ten years, has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery, and is a big Aston Villa fan (but we don’t hold it against him!). Recently, he’s also been developing his skills in leadership and business and is mentoring Raya, who joined us 18 months ago on our dedicated new graduate scheme and whose clinical skills are flying.

Becca, at 8 years qualified, is an incredibly capable pair of hands. She’s a great communicator, has a big interest in exotics, and is a rock-solid team member. She also takes a few weeks out of clinical practice each summer to run a forest school. Kirsty joined us four years ago after graduating from Liverpool. There’s always one in every practice that attracts the rare cases; in ours, it’s Kirsty! She’s also very environmentally aware and was the driving force behind our Investors in the Environment Award. In recognition of her amazing work in sustainability, she was one of the three finalists of the BVA Young Vet of the Year 2022.

Philippa juggles family life and works part-time; she has been qualified for 13 years, is our go-to ultrasonographer, and enjoys using our Logic R8 with Doppler. Jasmina joined us earlier this year and is growing clinically under Huw’s mentorship. Vicky, our 2023 RVC grad, has just joined us and is developing really well and is mentored by Becca.

“Having completed multiple placements with the MK team, it was clear to me that this was the practice that I would love to work for upon graduation. Since starting, I have received great support and guidance at a pace that I feel comfortable with. The team itself is brilliant, with all members equally valued and with a real sense of friendship throughout. There is an emphasis on team well-being and mental health and an approach whereby everyone’s ideas and opinions matter. It is a great place to work, and I’m proud to be an employee here.” Vicky MRCVS

“I love working at V4P Milton Keynes. The team here are supportive and generous to each other. Every day, something different happens, and that’s saying something as I have worked here for over a decade! But that’s what makes the job so interesting.” Alison, Practice Manager

Facilities and Kit

We’ve got all the usual kit and facilities to make life just that little bit easier in practice: currently we have 6 consult rooms, two theatres, separate cat and dog wards, a lovely colleague room, flexible scopes (gastroscope, bronchoscope), rigid endoscopy (x 4) -rhinoscopy/laparoscope/arthroscopes, Stortz image capture, plenty of infusion pumps and syringe drivers, multi -parameters plus portable capnography, orthopaedic kit plus nerve stimulator, K- laser, dental x-ray and  EPOC. We’re also ISFM Silver accredited.

In 2024, we will be expanding to 8 consult rooms and increase to 3 theatres. We’re also adding several dedicated clinical spaces, such as an imaging room and dental suite, and an enhanced colleague space.

The Role and Rota

Our vets work a 4-day week, with the day off generally fixed. Our out-of-hours are outsourced to Vets Now, who also look after our inpatients, so there are no nights or weekends on-call. Weekends are just 1:4, and during the week, we have a variety of shifts: 9-7 for prep and consults, 8-6 on your dedicated operating day and no evening consult that day, and 12-8 pm is the late shift (which is just once a week). We actually get our lunch breaks and have dedicated admin time built into the rota. We will always aim to support you with new or ongoing clinical interests or even to do research in practice. That way, you know you can keep developing clinically and continue to get job satisfaction.  There is also the opportunity to become part of the senior vet team, as well as the possibility of partnership in the future.

Outside of work

As a team, we have lots of different hobbies, like cycling, running, American football and knitting, to name a few, but we also like getting together as a practice. We have a fixed programme of social events organised throughout the year. In previous years, we’ve enjoyed ‘The Howl’ a local Halloween ‘scare-fest’, doing escape rooms, having a summer family BBQ and the Christmas festivities at a local manor house.

Milton Keynes is known for its concrete cows and roundabouts, but it’s a vastly underrated city. A large green belt surrounds it, so you’re never far from a green space and beautiful countryside.  It’s full of culture and things to do, from visiting the theatre district to shopping and eating out. It has also become an extreme sports hotspot where you can water-ski, windsurf and more on Willen Lake, or head to Xscape, where you can hit the UK's longest indoor real-snow ski and boarding slope, take on the climbing wall or try freefall indoor skydiving (we have done this together as a practice trip!). It's also very accessible, with London and Luton Airport just 30 minutes away. Not only are there great transport links, but you won’t find yourself stuck in rush hour traffic thanks to all the roundabouts!

We are offering:

  • A salary of £45,000-£70,000 plus team and individual bonus
  • 5.5 weeks holiday, plus bank holidays and your birthday off.
  • CPD encouraged, supported and funded with a budget of £2500, plus certificates and non-clinical leadership
  • Professional fees paid for RCVS, VDS and BVA
  • Visa’s sponsored
  • Enhanced maternity pay (13 weeks full pay then 13 weeks ½ pay)
  • Discounts available for shopping, flights, restaurants etc.

We would love a vet with some experience to join us on our journey to hospital status. Please do call for an informal chat or apply now
