Are you a recent graduate looking to get your career off to a flying start or an experienced vet looking to grow your career in a happy, supportive environment?
We are an independent, family-run, small animal practice in West Yorkshire that opened its doors in 2005. We’ve grown in size to a 4/5-vet practice with 6 fantastic RVNs. What we can offer is amazing support in a modern, well-equipped surgery. We both still love our jobs and want to pass that passion on; we want our new vet to love this amazing profession, and we can promise to nurture you to the hilt to make that happen.
We moved to a new site in 2018; the outside of the building is beautiful, full of character and dates back to 1923. Don’t be fooled by the historic exterior; when you step inside, it’s been converted to hospital standards with two highly equipped inter-connecting theatres, an imaging room with ultrasound and digital X-ray, a separate dental room with dental x-ray, separate dog and cat wards (we are IFSM Cat silver accredited). We also have space for future plans to install a CT scanner.
Myles, one of the two partners, performs a wide range of surgical procedures from orthopaedics, including TTA, Z-Lig™ repairs and RidgeStop™, to more complex soft tissue surgeries. Buddy, pictured in our video, had his PDA repaired with us and is in rude health. Cheryl enjoys small animal medicine, acupuncture and small furries. We are also fortunate to have the support of VPS, a group of veterinary surgeons who visit the surgery with their endoscopes and advanced imagers, enabling us to keep the more challenging cases in-house and learn from their expertise. So, whatever your interests are, somebody is here to support you and help you develop your skills.
The role is a 4-day week with 1:4 Saturday mornings only. We consult 9 pm-6 pm during the week. We really value everyone’s work-life balance and want everyone to leave on time, so our last appointment is 5.30 pm. We also have lunch and coffee breaks built into the day and admin time, meaning no one stays late to make calls or write up notes. A local practice covers our OOHs at the weekends, so there are no weekends or bank holidays on-call. Monday -Thursday, we cover our own OOHs on a shared rota. New graduates would only join this rota when they are ready and would also have our backup. We are also happy to chat about flexible working and part-time hours.
We want this to be a place where you can spread your wings, flourish, and feel confident to have a go at stuff, knowing we will be there to back you up. Our team also know how to read each other well and will always step in to help. Cheryl has completed the Vet GDP course to support our new grads, and we would be happy to look at new graduate schemes in addition to our support.
But don’t just take our word for it; this is what some of our team have said about working with us:
“I’ve just completed my first year of being qualified here at Friendly Animal Clinic. I was first attracted to this practice after meeting Cheryl, Myles and the amazing nursing team. They have been crucial in making sure I had constant support and advice but also in giving me the space to take charge and gain experience. I enjoy being able to follow my own patients, but we are also busy enough to see lots of cool cases. I have really enjoyed surgery and using all the amazing facilities - great ultrasound, X-ray, dental X-ray and state-of-the-art theatres. It’s an amazing team, and I’ve found it easy to slot right in!” Rose MRCVS
“I’ve been locuming at Friendly Animal Clinic for about 7 months now. The practice is an extremely pleasant place to work, with smiling, welcoming and supportive staff always trying to give the best service for its patients. It is a great place for new graduate vets /nurses as well as advanced veterinarians, with a very good life /work balance.” Angel MRCVS
“I’ve been doing placements at Friendly Animal Clinic since before I got into vet school. I’m now in my 5th year and still see practice here regularly. The whole team is so lovely, and Myles and Cheryl are great at explaining cases and are keen to let me try things for the first time. As a result, I’ve gained a lot of crucial experience here, seeing lots of medical and surgical cases. As well as scrubbing in to help in more complex surgeries like cruciate repairs, this week I’ve been given lots of independence doing cat spays, and I hope to do a dog castrate next! Overall a really good, supportive practice and a great place to develop your skills.” Holly, 5th Year Vet Student
We are a practice that enjoys working and socialising together. We all get on so well, and whether we go to the cinema or enjoy a weekend getaway like our recent trip to Centre Parcs (apologies to Myles and Cheryl for leaving them holding the fort), we always have a great time together. We are also very much part of the community and love our clients, BUT they are not always right; we absolutely support our fantastic staff.
