About Potton Vets

When we opened Potton Vets in 2005 we wanted to have the freedom to work up cases properly, and to use our knowledge and drive to improve the standard of veterinary care by making the correct diagnosis early and giving the best treatment possible for the pets under our care, without it being beyond our clients means. We were also juggling a young family and needed the flexibility to manage the diary to ensure we could enjoy a healthy work-life balance, which is something we wanted to offer all our team.

Over the years we have grown into a thriving 5 vet independent small animal practice with a caring, friendly, and supportive long-standing team who enjoy working together. We are currently in the process of expanding into bigger premises and have exciting plans for the future.

We are an exceptionally well-equipped, diagnostic-orientated practice. We have all the kit you can think of or desire, including ultrasound with cardiac capability (4 probes), DR radiography including dental radiography, a full Idexx in-house lab, and a K laser. Our vets have additional experience, expertise, and training in endoscopy and we have a bronchoscope, gastroscope, rhinoscope, and an arthroscope. We also have laparoscopy and currently approx. 90% of our spays are carried out laparoscopically, and we are happy to train you in this skill. We’re also an ISFM accredited Cat-Friendly Clinic.

About our team

Alan is an Advanced Practitioner in Diagnostic Imaging with a special interest in surgery, undertaking orthopaedic procedures including MMPs and JPS (Juvenile pubic symphysiodesis) in house. Alan loves to talk about his passion for imaging and surgery and he is a fantastic mentor for less experienced vets who are looking to grow their skills.

Rene particularly enjoys medicine and is happy to share her knowledge and experience. Carla has a CertAVP and is currently working towards a certificate in Small Animal Medicine. India is currently on maternity leave and will be back with us soon, and Hannah, who is the newest addition to our team, has settled in well and has found the whole team to be so supportive.

We are an RCVS accredited nurse training practice and have an amazing nursing team with 4 RVNS, 2 SVNs, and 1 VCA. We also have a great reception team who together with the nurses make sure each day runs as smoothly as possible.

Potton Veterinary SurgeryWhat our team says about Potton Vets

“An incredibly supportive environment with a caseload to satisfy any clinical interests. The team at Potton Vets is a close-knit one, making anyone feel very welcome and appreciated, even as a recent graduate! The practice also maintains a lovely client base, with opportunities to build valuable rapport with your patients' owners.” Hannah MRCVS

“I've working with Potton Vets for 3.5 years. The independent practice environment is invaluable: you have clinical autonomy and at the same time you feel like you're part of something. The team is very friendly and the practice allows you to work cases to a high standard.” Carla MRCVS

“I first started as a student veterinary nurse getting qualified and progressing through the years to now being Head nurse and clinical supervisor. In between those years, I have strayed away but I kept coming back to Potton Vets as the team is supportive, flexible, and caring. The clients are friendly, good community environment, and are understanding.

I'm proud to recommend the practice because I know the patients will receive excellent care. I would trust any of my peers with the care of my own animals. There's a range of experience, knowledge, and skills within the team and opportunities to develop personal areas of interest.

Working for an independent practice with outstanding values Potton Vets stand out and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new venture and welcome them into the family.” Rachel Head RVN

“I have worked in a few different veterinary practices before but have never come across a more dedicated, friendly, and caring team than at Potton Vets. We are just one huge family that treats every patient like they are our own. There are opportunities to experience new and exciting cases knowing you are supported by the whole team.” Molly RVN

“I started at Potton Vets in 2017 then left three years later to take a job with a charity that I had always wanted to do. Fast forward 18 months and I am back at Potton Vets!!  The team here is great, we have a laugh and we support each other. There is a real emphasis on us all getting together for staff outings which further enhances bonds and friendships.  It's a real family. The owners are also very supportive, and you can go to them with any problem you may have and they will listen to you and take action if necessary. I feel proud to work at Potton Vets.”  Tracy Receptionist

“I joined Potton Vets as a student veterinary nurse 3 years ago, throughout my course all the staff have been so supportive, caring, and friendly from the day I started. We see a range of cases each day and there is always something new to learn. We support each other on the harder days when needed and have formed good relationships. It's so refreshing to be part of a team that genuinely cares about me and my learning.” Georgia SVN

“Before starting work in 2010 as a receptionist I was a client at Potton Vets and was always impressed by the care they showed to my pets and me.  As a team we offer excellent care, always wanting to do the very best. We all have different skills and strengths which means there is always someone available to discuss a difficult case or offer advice.” Steph Receptionist/Administrator

“As a Student Veterinary Nurse who has been working at Potton Vets for over 2 years, I could not ask for a better place to work and study. The whole team is kind, diligent, and supportive of one another. The care of the animals and their wellbeing is the top priority which makes for a very happy team and makes us feel very fulfilled.” Beth SVN

Potton Veterinary SurgeryThe role

We are ideally looking for a vet with some experience to join our team and there is so much opportunity here to grow your knowledge and career here. We will always encourage you to follow your interests so if you’re looking to take on a certificate or want to expand your skills in a particular discipline then we will do all we can to support this.

We know how important work-life balance is and are proud of the flexible rota options we can offer our team. We have even been awarded Gold in the Flexee Health Score (FHS), which measures and tracks workplace flexibility. Our full-time vets work a 4-day week with just 1:3 Saturday mornings (8:30am-12pm). However, if you have other commitments to work around or would prefer part-time hours we are happy to chat about a bespoke rota that works for you. Our out-of-hours are outsourced to Vets Now in Barton-Le-Clay, who also look after our in-patients, so your evenings, weekends, and bank holidays are free to enjoy.

We have 20 minute consultations as standard and the diary is scheduled to give the vets a break between 2pm to 4pm so there is plenty of time to have a proper lunch break, make phone calls, and catch up on admin.

We are forward thinking and use a continuous improvement process so that all the team can put forward their ideas and know their input is appreciated and will be acted upon. We use a card system for non-urgent ideas and issues so that things don’t get overlooked. We read out the cards at our regular practice meetings so we can all chat things through and make plans with the support of the whole team.

Our social scene

We’re a really sociable team who regularly get together outside of work whether we’re having a pizza and prosecco night, punting on the River Cam or heading off for a day of shooting or axe throwing, there’s always something fun in the pipeline. We often hold our rep talks and vet meetings at the local pub so we can enjoy a drink and a meal as we chat things through.

Potton Veterinary SurgeryThe local area

We may be biased but we love Potton! It’s a town with the community feel of a village and there are lots of local clubs to get involved in. We even have our own big weekend celebration ‘Party on Potton’ which is a great shindig of entertainment, events and games for all the local community. Bedfordshire is a truly outdoorsy county with beautiful countryside ideal for walking and cycling. Cambridge and Bedford are both just 30 minutes away and our central location provides easy access to London by train or car along the A1M corridor.
