Job Details

Tamar Vets is a rapidly growing small animal practice based in Bude on the beautiful North Cornwall coast, with branches at Holsworthy and Hartland. Excellent client and patient standards of care are at the core of our approach. We also believe that pet care is more than just about caring. Truly caring is about being connected and strengthening the bond between the pet, its owner and you, its vet.

We are passionately independent; we manage our practice here, not in some remote head office. This means we can offer you active involvement in the direction and development of the practice and the autonomy to make day-to-day decisions to improve systems processes and client engagement.

We’re looking for a small animal vet to expand our team from 8 vets to 9. Our vets have a range of experience, from recently qualified to many years in practice. Jon has a keen interest in orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery and holds a certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice. He is also our VetGDP Advisor and enjoys mentoring new graduates as they start their veterinary journey, offering the support and guidance needed to help them build their confidence. We also collaborate with Vetsure and the 'Grads to Vets Package' to give our new grads the best start. Callum joined us in August 2022 after graduating and is enjoying working with us. This is what he has to say about Tamar Vets:

“As a new graduate, the team at Tamar Vets have gone out of their way to make me feel very welcome and supported. In a very short time, I already feel integrated into the team dynamic. There is always a friendly face around to run through cases, provide assistance or give a push in the right direction. As an independent practice, I’ve been given the flexibility to meet the needs of the patients and owners, giving them the best care possible and still having enough time to add a personal touch.”

Richard has a cardiology certificate and takes local cardiology referrals. He particularly enjoys internal medicine and diagnostic imaging. Huw is a very experienced vet who is enjoying his return to clinical practice after a long career in veterinary management. Huw has an interest in oncology and is hoping to pursue a certificate in this area. Hilary recently joined us from America, where she worked in a busy hospital in Phoenix. Victoria, whose interest lies in diagnostic imaging, Howard, who originally started the practice, and Kate all work part-time with us and complete our experienced veterinary team.

We have all the usual kit, including digital and dental x-ray, ultrasound with Doppler, gastro- and rhino-scopes, laser therapy, and in-house lab. We are also currently training to use arthroscopy and laparoscopy and are looking forward to offering these services.

We are members of the Vetsure and Vet Dynamics communities and emphasise a progressive approach to veterinary medicine with a healthy work-life balance. Most weeks, our full-time vets typically work a 33-hour week over 4 days, with two 5 p.m. finishes each week and time set aside in the diary to catch up on admin and phone calls. All our vets rotate through the branches, ensuring everyone has the time to build client bonds and participate in the operating schedule. We are also happy to chat about flexible/ part-time hours if you have other commitments to work around.

We provide our own out-of-hours service, covering one night each week and just 1:5 weekends. Our calls are taken by Kernow Vets messaging service so that any OOH calls will have been screened, and our OOH service is generally quiet. For less experienced vets, there will always be backup available. Also, on the week preceding and following the weekend, there are no night duties during those weeks.

We have rounds every morning, which provides the opportunity to hand over cases from the OOHs and improves the continuity of patient and client care. We also use this time to plan our day, agree on pre-meds, and receive feedback from our nurse's clinical improvement board. We also have regular vets and nurses’ meetings, and every three months, we have a full practice meeting, where we close the practice and get together over lunch.

We’re a sociable team; whether it’s a meal out to welcome you to the team, BBQs on the beach, pizza nights, a Halloween party, or our fabulous Christmas party, we enjoy getting together outside of work. We’re also active Cornish Veterinary Association members and look forward to attending the CVA Ball soon.

Bude sits on its own stretch of wild and rugged North Cornwall coast backed by miles of beautiful countryside and just a stone’s throw from the Devon border. It’s a fantastic place to live with a laid-back atmosphere and a great community feel, and it was also voted Britain’s sunniest location!! There is something for everyone, from music and arts festivals, micro-breweries, independently owned shops, and restaurants to stately homes and all the outdoor activities and water sports you could wish for.
