Job Details

Wye Valley Vets is looking for a vet to join our thriving first opinion, independent practice. Our close-knit, experienced team of vets, nurses and reception staff will provide a friendly, supportive environment while you take the next step in your career. Being an independent practice means you will have direct access and influence over the management of practice ethics alongside fast decision making and flexibility.

Our current premises started as a purpose-built medical facility which we have modified into a spacious veterinary clinic. We are very proud of our facilities which include digital x-ray, ultrasound and in-house lab, along with the advanced surgical kit needed for orthopaedic surgeries including fracture repair and TPLOs and advanced soft tissue surgeries.

Wye Valley VetsIf you’re looking to develop your skills then this is the practice for you. I enjoy teaching and with over 30 years’ experience in small animal practices I am happy to share my knowledge and provide a wealth of support. If you want to get involved in the more complex surgeries like TPLOs or BOAS we can create opportunities in the day’s schedule to ensure you can scrub in and learn.

If you’re looking to undertake a certificate, this will be fully supported and could be funded. We have the facilities, varied caseload and an existing team of experienced staff enthusiastic to welcome someone looking to gain their certificate. We also have a surgical rota meaning all vets get to practice their surgical skills regularly.

If you’re a recent graduate, looking to take those all-important first steps in practice, I am a GDP Advisor able to help you find your feet. I value my team and want to provide a safe environment for you as you enhance your experience and build on your learning. Whether you need an extra pair of hands with a surgical procedure or have a case that you want to talk about I will be on hand to help. This is what Nicole has to say about us:

"I started working at Wye Valley Vets one month after graduating. They are a lovely team of extremely supportive and welcoming people. Chris is a great mentor and always accommodating to his staff. The practice itself is well laid out and equipped, and the location is ideal for exploring the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. I would recommend this practice to both new grads and those with more experience." Nicole D'Mello MRCVS

The week’s rota is negotiable whilst the Saturday rota is 1:3 and there are no Sundays, on-call or OOHs. You will also get a day back for working the Saturday.

Situated in the old market city of Hereford, on the Welsh border between the rolling beauty of the Wye valley and the stunning mountains of the Brecon Beacons, this is an idyllic situation for those loving an outdoor life and yet it’s only one hour to Cardiff, an hour and three quarters to Bristol and a two and a half hours to London.

We are offering a salary of £35,000 to £65,000 depending on experience, with five weeks annual leave plus bank holidays. Partnership prospects are real. I am enthusiastic to take on a partner and I’d much prefer the traditional routes to practice owner and should welcome someone eager to invest in the practice I have built here.

If you’re looking for that next step in your career, we could be the right place for you. To find out more please call us for an informal chat or click the apply button now.

Two Veterinary surgeons wanted to help us expand our beautiful purpose-built independent practice from 3.5 vets to 4.5 vets. Equally suitable for both new graduates to experienced vets. Situated in the old market town of Hereford, on the Welsh border, we are juxta-positioned between the rolling scenery of the stunning wye valley and the striking mountains of the Brecon Beacons. Our spacious clinic opened 6 years ago so everything was new and made to measure and we are still reinvesting in equipment and knowledge.

Working in an independent practice means working with people that care about their patients, their clients, and ultimately their profession. Being an independent practice means you have direct access and influence over the management of the practice and fast decision making and flexibility.

Salary levels are 30 - 60 K depending on experience.

As the senior vet, I have nearly 30 years of experience in the small animal world providing a wealth of support and knowledge for the less experienced members of the profession, I have taught many new and recent graduates over the years so have a full understanding of the difficulties and pitfalls and worries and stress that you may face.

We currently have a team of 3.5 vets 2 vet nurses and 2 trainees and one apprenticeship AVNA  and then our reception team supports the day-to-day running of the clinic. We have a fixed surgical rota meaning that all vets get to practice that skill. One of the current vets will be leaving us next year to take a job in one of my other practices in Hong Kong, a route I would actively encourage.

We open the clinic Monday - Saturday (8 AM to 7 PM) and the vets work shifts of 8 hours in that time period. Any Saturday is followed by a day off in the week. There are 20 days of holidays plus the bank holiday allowance. We do cover our own OOH service but additionally share that rota with a neighbouring practice. Generally, to make the OOH less onerous I do the weeknights and the weekends are shared on a rota basis depending on who’s working the weekend. Any new graduate applicants won’t be expected to be on call for the first 6 months. And generally, I will always be on back in case of difficult cases coming in - rare. For example this week I have had one phone call and no call-outs. Being on call is renumerated by 50% of the emergency call-out fee ( excluding  VAT ) so on average adds another £500 to the monthly payments.
