This is an exciting opportunity for a mixed Vet to join our team at the UK’s most northerly Vet practice. Experience the amazing scenery and culture of the Shetland Islands while working with a variety of species of animal. Work alongside a great team who will offer support when needed and give you plenty of laughs along the way.
Shetland Vets is an independent practice and the only Vets in the beautiful Shetland Islands. We cover all of the inhabited Islands’ Veterinary needs as well as the Shetlands mainland. We have 3 branches located in Bixter, Scalloway and Lerwick. Being the only practice and given our island location, we see a wide range of animals from cats to cows and owls to otters, even the odd wallaby! We have a lovely, supportive and knowledgeable team and you’ll always find someone willing to lend a hand or offer advice on a case. With a mixture of younger and experienced staff, there are 3 full-time RVNs and 4 part-time RVNs along with 2 ACAs and our 5 Vets. Our Receptionists and Admin staff complete our team. All of us have key areas of interest and we are looking forward to adding a new Vet into the mix. We have been an employee-owned business since 2014, meaning that shares in the company are held by a Trust for the long-term benefit of the employees. We try to encourage all staff to have an input into the way we run the business, and for people to feel they have a stake in it.
We are located in the most Northerly group of Islands in Scotland - Shetland. The scenery and culture of Shetland is a joy to explore. Shetland was ranked as number 6 in the Lonely Planets’ list of top European destinations - the only place in the UK to feature! There is always something to look forward to throughout the year. In January we start our world-famous fire festival and Up Helly Aa celebrations. We have an exciting music scene and in April there’s our popular folk festival. Summer sees the time of the midnight sun, or ‘Simmer Dim’, when we have long hours of daylight, great for exploring the Islands. Hill-walking, kayaking, cycling and wild sea swimming are all popular outdoor activities in Shetland. As is wildlife spotting, orcas are a fairly common sighting in our waters all year round. We also see the Northern Lights in the dark winter months. It is a fantastic home for people of all ages and is a great place to bring up children, with excellent schools and extracurricular activities.
We are looking for a mixed Vet to join our team on a full-time basis. You would work 4 days a week with some additional half-day Saturdays. Due to our Island location, we cover our own out-of-hours. This is 1-in-5 weekday nights and 1-in-5 weekends on call (with the Monday off after a weekend on call). Hours are typically between 8.30am-5.30pm, with the occasional later shift (10am-7pm). A typical week would see you rotating between our 3 practices and would include operating, and a LA visit shift each week. Our rota allows for varied caseloads but also allows for continuity of care for those longer cases. There is scope to travel to the outer Islands for those confident of sole charge. Our practice is well equipped with ultrasound scanners, digital and dental x-ray, endoscope, and idexx lab suite. We have a lot of interest from Vet students wanting to experience working with us, so there is the opportunity for teaching also.
Our ideal candidate would be a friendly and enthusiastic, mixed Vet, who enjoys the challenges and variety in caseload that being an Island Vet brings. Our new team member should join in our commitment to providing the best service we can to the people and animals of Shetland.
Whilst we are looking for a full-time, mixed Vet, we always love to hear from anyone who may be interested in working with us here in Shetland. So small animal only and Vets wishing to work part-time are welcome to get in touch and we can discuss any options available. New Graduates are welcome to apply.
