We are a family-run independent small animal and exotics practice in beautiful Norfolk.
Faye, our practice owner, really loves being a vet but found there were financial barriers preventing her from being the vet she wanted to be so she decided to set up her own practice. After much searching to find the right property, Faye applied for planning permission to build in her parent’s field. Faye was able to design the purpose-built practice with the goal of achieving RCVS hospital status, which we are currently working towards, so our facilities are fantastic, including separate cat, dog, and exotic waiting areas and wards, and air conditioning and fresh gas ventilation system throughout the practice.
We are an ISFM ‘Gold Feline Friendly’ practice, a RWAF Gold Rabbit Friendly and a Dog-friendly accredited clinic.
We have a varied and interesting caseload, approximately 40% dogs, 30% cats, and 30% exotics (of which 50% are rabbits/guinea pigs and small mammals, 30% birds, 15% reptiles, and 5% zoo work). Please don’t be put off by the exotic caseload as there is always support available and we’re happy to share our knowledge and provide in-house training if needed. We also support local practices with advice and offer referral consultations.
We are committed to providing high-quality care and this includes continued investment in our facilities to allow rapid in-house diagnosis and treatment. In 2017 we built an extension to house our onsite CT scanner ‘Lily Lightspeed’, and our luxury pet hotel which looks after the pets on long-term medication and allows our clients to have a stress-free holiday as our fabulous RVNs have everything covered.
We have all the kit you could wish for and the skilled team to use it, including digital x-ray, dental x-ray, ultrasound with cardiac capabilities (we have just upgraded to a brand new scanner), video gastroscope, bronchoscope, laryngoscope, rigid scope, multi-parameter monitors, and laser therapy.
Since opening in 2014 with just 2 vets and 2 nurses, the practice has really thrived and we now have an amazing and experienced clinical team of 10 vets, 7 RVNs, 1 SVN, and 1 ANA. We also have a great admin team of 2 receptionists, an Administration Manager, and our Practice Manager Nola who oversees the whole team.
Faye qualified from the RVC in 2009 before working in various practices around Norfolk. She gained her PgC in Exotic Animal Studies in 2012 and became an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine in 2017. Faye loves soft tissue surgery and performs more complex procedures including BOAS, PDA, and liver shunts in-house. She is also happy to perform orthopaedics such as fracture repairs and patella luxations, and for more complex procedures we benefit from the expertise of a visiting orthopaedic surgeon.
Lesley is passionate about surgery, working as an ops-only vet. She enjoys mentoring and is happy to share her knowledge and for less experienced vets to scrub in and learn. She is also our Vet GDP Advisor and has been helping our less surgically experienced vets to build up their confidence since they joined us. Our team includes 4 night vets and 3 part-time vets, Jasmine, Ellis, and Samia who is a Certificate holder in cardiology and also provides an acupuncture service for our clients.
“I’m a 5-year graduate and have been with Toll Barn just over a year now and I bring a little bright and crazy to the team. Coming from having done very little exotics to seeing multiple exotics cases every day has been great to boost my confidence in the more weird and wonderful. Faye (the exotics certificate holder) is happy to answer your questions if you are unsure and the clinic has lots of new toys with CT, new ultrasound and endoscopy etc.
The nursing and reception team are fab and the rest of the team are friendly and hardworking. Samia (cardiology certificate holder) is expanding the areas of expertise within the clinic with our surgery-only vet Lesley (who helped train Faye back in the day!) around to help with surgical development. It’s a great place for an all-rounder and if you are keen to expand your knowledge and are up for mucking in and learning it’s a great place to further and enjoy your career.” Jasmine MRCVS
“I have been at Toll Barn for just over 6 months. I moved to Norfolk from a career in mixed practice up north and I have really enjoyed my time here so far. I have been fortunate enough to be given the flexibility to pursue my interests in diagnostic imaging and exotics. I have learnt lots with regular opportunities to make use of CT and endoscopy. Support is always available if needed and I have benefited from the expertise of the team who are fantastic to work with. We are also always well-supplied with cake, which is a bonus!” Rebecca MRCVS
Our experienced team of RVNs also all have areas of expertise such as behaviour and exotics and undertake a wealth of clinics for our clients.
We really are a genuinely happy team who enjoys working together to offer the best service to our lovely, loyal clients. We have an open-door policy, and we all know if we have any issues or concerns then Nola and Faye are always available to have a chat and value our input.
We also enjoy getting together socially, making the most of our beautiful rural setting with activities like hiking, dog walks, kayaking, and trips to the local pubs. We also have our regular summer BBQ and Christmas party.
We fully support career development and encourage our team to further their knowledge and keep up with new techniques. Whether you are looking to take on a certificate or want to learn new skills, we have the caseload and team to support this. We also have our meeting room on site so we can hold in-house CPD and training.
About the role
We are ideally looking for a vet with some experience. Our full-time vets work a 4-day week and we rota your day off to include 4-day weekends off work to allow mini breaks and a genuinely good work-life balance. We would also be happy to chat about part-time roles. Our shifts are 8.30am to 7 pm, with daily 30-minute rounds scheduled for 8.30am and 6.30pm to allow us to make plans for the day and hand over cases. We have 3 types of shifts, an ops shift, a consult shift, and a long ops shift (where you have no routine morning appointments, only admits). You will have one of each shift every week so there is plenty of opportunity to expand your skills and knowledge. A consultation-only role could be accommodated if desired.
We recently established our own dedicated night team of vets - Adam, Andrew, Marco and Victor - so we could provide a better service for both our patients and our team, and this means there are no routine nights for our day vets. During the week our night team also offers twilight consultations between 7 pm to 9.30pm which means our day vets don’t get held up with those last-minute calls and can leave on time.
Our weekend rota is just 1:4 and you’ll get a half day on the Friday before and the Monday following the weekend worked. There is a Saturday consulting shift between 9 am to 12.30pm, and then you will be on call for the weekend daytime only, with the night team taking over at 7 pm. If you are less experienced or need an extra pair of hands, there is always backup available and someone to offer advice.
