Would you like to be part of a young, dynamic dog and cat-only practice where every team member has a say and can influence and guide our future?
James Horner Vets has grown quickly over the last two years, and we are now looking to expand our clinical team, so something must be going right! We were delighted to be voted Best Start-Up for the second year running and in the UK Top 25 practices at the Best UK Vets Awards 2023. Our success is down to the team, and central to this is we all really enjoy working here and collaborating with our clients to deliver care we can be proud of.
We are a young practice, and this is great; every team member has a say and can influence and guide the future of the practice. Our quick growth has meant that, in addition to your normal salary, we are really pleased to offer a profit share bonus to every team member at the end of each year, and for 2023, we’re on track to give everyone an additional £2000+!
“My experience at James Horner Vets can only be described as refreshing. Working for an employer that takes pride in both developing the skills of his team whilst also actively encouraging a good work-life balance is a breath of fresh air. I believe that the modern approach of James Horner Vets is the future of the veterinary industry, and I am proud to be a part of it.” Sophie D. Head Nurse
My intention was to create a workplace and environment for the team to really flourish, where a talented RVN is better off with us than working as a locum – all the while being able to offer a professional service to clients who value our advice.
We are really happy to be expanding and are looking for an RVN with some experience to join our brilliant nursing team. We’re a nurse training practice and great believers in developing the RVN nurse practitioner status. Both our Head Nurse, Sophie, and Senior RVN, Sophie, are clinical coaches. They support our SVN Sarah as well as Samantha, who recently completed the VCA training and who hopes to become an RVN in the future.
“I really like the strong network in and outside the practice. Add in the good working hours, a small, close-knit, friendly team, and support to always better yourself; I couldn’t be happier.” Sophie L. RVN
Our nurses do just that, nurse! Schedule 3 procedures are not just talked about but actively encouraged. Our RVNs regularly take on dental scale and polishes, stitch-ups, and perform x-rays. We run well-established nurse clinics in weight management, socialisation, and osteoarthritis, which have proved really popular with our clients. If you are interested in a particular area of consulting, we are more than happy for you to develop this and expand our services so you can utilise your skills and training to help drive the practice forward. In addition to this, if you want to take on a certificate or further training, this will be fully supported.
There is an equal share of the nursing shifts, and these days will involve anything from coordinating the day and making sure everything is set in place, being the theatre nurse for all surgeries, monitoring patients/post-op recovery, or taking on that day’s consults.
We’re a really close-knit, friendly team that enjoys a good get-together, not just for our annual Christmas party! On the first Thursday of every month, we have a team meal out, where everyone is welcome to come along for some great food and a relaxed evening full of laughs. If you have any four-legged buddies, you can absolutely come and join us on our regular dog walks or bring your family along to any days out.
Knowing what we don’t want helps us care and build on what we do want; this is an ethos the whole team discusses and brings to the table. We know the type of client we want and actively seek to gain and retain them. This starts with the species we help to care for – only cats and dogs! No rabbits, reptiles, or hamsters…
Having spent a lot of time in multiple species practice (including production poultry!) I realised that fear of failure is a big barrier to our own well-being, and fear of rabbit anaesthetics is not an uncommon sentiment within the nursing profession!
In addition to promoting individual development, every 3 months, we close the practice for the day and have a team lunch and training day where we reflect on our successes, focus on initiatives brought by the team, and discuss clinical interests amongst all levels.
We believe in face-to-face care and compassionate service. To facilitate this, our Wellness Subscriptions are the principal model we work to. Having worked as a locum and a full-time vet in many practices with Health Care plans, the concept is good, but the execution is not always great. We want the right clients to subscribe; those who literally buy into the ethos and us. They visit more regularly and build a greater rapport, and the RVNs are often the ones to drive this. This leads to better advice, less pressure on selling “stuff”, and a deeper trust between us and our clients.
We have the usual equipment, including multi-parameter monitoring, and being new, we can invest in many potential directions based on the interests and experience of our team. We have a separate cat ward and are already accredited as an ISFM silver cat-friendly and RCVS-accredited practice.
