Are you looking to pursue your interests and develop your skills? Come and join the supportive team at the multi-award-winning Windmill Veterinary Centre.
We are an independent 7-vet small animal practice recently voted Best Vets in Buckinghamshire for the third year running and in the UK Top 25 practices at the Best UK Vets Awards 2023. We are proud of our strong bonds within the local community and with our clients. Having happy clients is one of the many reasons why Windmill is a lovely place to work.
Windmill Vets started as a mixed practice before Jane, our Director, purchased the small animal part in 1997, with vet Jacqui Naysmith joining as a partner in 2001. Since then, we have continued to grow, and we now have our main practice at Winslow and our branch clinic in Buckingham.
Jane, who graduated from the RVC in 1980, holds a certificate in anaesthesia and particularly enjoys orthopaedics. Jane is also our VetGDP Advisor and is happy to mentor new graduates and less experienced vets.
Richard graduated from RVC in 1999 and worked in small animal practice in Sussex before moving to a hospital in Aylesbury. Looking for a practice that focused on the clients and not the targets, Richard joined Windmill in 2017, where he found the welcoming and stress-free atmosphere to be just what he needed. In his words, “There’s nowhere else quite like Windmill”, a comment made by many, which is why he took over the partnership from Jacqui when sadly she passed away. Richard has a GP certificate in small animal medicine and became an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in 2017.
We are happy to invest in our facilities to drive the practice forward and allow the team to follow their interests. We have all the usual kit, including digital and dental X-rays, ultrasound, laparoscopy, endoscopy, in-house lab and class IV laser therapy. We have significantly upgraded our orthopaedic and ophthalmologic equipment to support the teams' interests. We have also recently refurbished all our consulting rooms and are a Silver ISFM Cat-Friendly practice with a dedicated cat waiting area and consult room.
We fully support career development, so whether you want to take on a certificate or improve your skills in a particular discipline, we will do everything we can to support you. We regularly use the services of MSM (Mobile Surgical Mentoring) to provide hands-on in-house mentoring. We’ve found this a great way to build surgical confidence as you get one-on-one support and learn with the facilities and kit you usually use. Matt, who is undertaking a surgical certificate, has found this invaluable as he learns laparoscopic spays.
“Windmill Veterinary Centre has been instrumental in helping me work towards gaining my veterinary certificate. They have engaged an external peripatetic service to provide me with the support I need to learn more complex surgical procedures. I am grateful for their guidance and expertise and hope to complete my certificate soon.” Matt MRCVS
Nicola worked with us as a locum before moving to Australia in 2015. We were delighted when she returned to the UK and became part of the permanent Windmill team. Johanna has an ECC certificate and has recently started working on an ophthalmology certificate. Lynne enjoys all aspects of practice life, particularly the small furries. We also benefit from visiting surgeons, including Sarah Keir of VetArtis, who performs cardiac and complex ultrasounds, and Andre Costa Pereira of London Veterinary Services, enabling us to offer more advanced, referral-level orthopaedic procedures in-house.
We are supported by our excellent nursing team of 7 RVNs and 1 ACA, our fantastic client care team and our Practice Manager Louise who has been looking after the whole team since 2001.
“From my first day here in 2002, I knew I had found my work family, and here I am 21 years later and loving it. I had a career break, but I was given all the support I needed with my return to work. The practice has grown over the years, but the ethos of Windmill has remained the same. Happy staff = Happy clients and Happy pets. Work-life balance has been key to a happy workplace. I strive to keep the practice running smoothly, and with support from my nursing team and other management colleagues, we do pretty well. Teamwork makes the dream work, none more so at Windmill.” Dawn, Head Nurse
We are flexible with the rota, so whether you’re looking to work a 4-day or a 4.5-day week, we are happy to chat about the options available. With the 4.5-day week, the rota is one 5 pm, two 6 pm and just one 7 pm finish. We also don’t book routine appointments between 6 pm and 7 pm to ensure we leave on time. We also schedule tea breaks twice daily to ensure everyone can breathe and catch up. Our Saturday rota is just 1:4 mornings only (8 am – 1 pm), and there are no out-of-hours, Sundays or bank holidays as our OOHs are outsourced, with clients having a choice of Vets Now or Hampden Veterinary Hospital.
We’re a sociable bunch who enjoy getting together outside of work; we even have a separate practice WhatsApp group just for social events. We all get a vote to choose our Christmas and summer parties, which has seen us hire out our local cricket pavilion for a family day of fun and games fuelled by wood-fired pizza from a local mobile pizza company. Fundraising is also important to us, especially raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support in the loving memory of Jacqui, whom we sadly lost in 2018. Jane recently completed a 50km walk in the fantastic time of 12 hours and 30 minutes! We are also involved with the local community, sponsoring the football team, judging the dog show, taking part in school talks and the horticultural show.
Winslow is a lovely market town with a mix of pubs, restaurants, and independent shops. It is also the only place in Buckinghamshire to hold a livestock market still. Situated just 20 minutes from Oxford, there are excellent transport links to London and Birmingham and easy airport access. We are also close to both the Cotswolds and the Chilterns.
