About Us

Portland House Veterinary Group has been working in partnership with clients in and around the Retford area in one form or another for over 50 years. Our main practice is located in central Retford and consists of 12 vets and 9 RVNs/SVNs with experience ranging from new graduates to 35+ years. Our Equine department is situated in a separate building in Retford and consists of 2 full time and 2 part time vets. We are a close-knit, supportive and friendly team with a strong ethos centred on supporting each other, client care, personal progression and achieving the elusive work life balance.

We have an excellent client base of largely leisure horses with some competition. A large proportion of our clients are insured and relatively low maintenance who appreciate our hard work. We aim to practice gold standard veterinary care in an ambulatory environment.

About the role

You’ll have access to an excellent range of equipment, modern battery powered kit, DR radiography, endoscope, gastroscope, motorised dentistry and ultrasound scanner. You’ll have the freedom to pursue your own areas of clinical interest. Key responsibilities will include vaccinations, dentistry, Lameness workups – including ridden assessments, nerve blocks, radiography, scanning; breeding, sedation, ultrasonography, 5 stage vettings, castrations, treatment plans/visits as well as working up cases.

Our people are at the heart of everything that we do, that’s why we know that work-life balance is vital in supporting our people to be their best selves. Our flexible approach to rota patterns and working hours offers a balance that truly flexes with you and your lifestyle no matter what stage you are in your career. A full time role would involve working 40 hours per week over 4.5 days. Weekday shifts are 08:30 – 17:00, with a set half day in the week. There’s an out of hours rota which currently sits at 1:6 as well. We can support part time applications/different shift patterns. However, the out of hours rota is non-negotiable.

About the Team and Culture

Across the group and our 4 practices we have 40 members of staff including; 16 vets including 2 certificate holders, 15 registered/student veterinary nurses and animal care assistants, with experience ranging from new graduates to 35 years, and a fantastic team of support staff. We pride ourselves in being a friendly and welcoming team with a supportive environment. The team regularly attend social events together and have multiple annual gatherings for all practices in the group.

Here's what the team have to say about life at Portland

“Working at Portland House Equine has been a highlight of my career as an equine vet. It was a massive change for me to come to a practice where the culture is not "we don't do it like that here", but "that's interesting - we haven't done it like that before, but let's look at it and see if we can make it work".  It's a young team, and the small equine department really benefits from being part of a larger practice family, with cross-pollination of ideas and equipment, and the larger social benefits that a big mixed team brings. Highly recommended.” – Lindsay, Head of Portland’s Equine Department.

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and ambitious equine veterinary surgeon to join our busy first and second opinion equine department.
•    Previous experience in an Equine role, (Essential);
•    Confident with all day-to-day routine work including castrations and PPEs/vettings (Essential);
